Tutoring review by Benjamin in Kirtland Air Force Base, NM
The student has a math test tomorrow, so we went over a review sheet for Unit 5 that she had drafted for herself. I was really impressed with the effort she put into creating her own study guide! After discussing substitution problems with multiple variables, which we had not had a chance to go over before, she felt confident about her test the next day. She really appreciates having a calculator to go over some of her arithmetic, and, while I think she should feel free to use her calculator to double check her work since she's allowed to use it on her test, I would encourage her to use mental math first and then move on to the calculator to clear up any doubts. We used our last few moments to go over an especially tricky ELA worksheet on making inferences from a text.

Tutoring review by Deirdre in Kirtland Air Force Base, NM
Today the student went over the US math homework he has due for the coming week and some catch-up work. We went over and did a US math 7.1 study guide, which covered calculating the rate of how much water leaked per hour and converting centimeters to meters. We also went over one of the make-up homework assignments for US math on lesson 7.4, which covered how to calculate the interest using a formula that uses the principal amount, percentage rate and time in years. He was still positive and motivated to complete his math homework and make-up assignment. Since this is the first time I observed him going over his US math homework, I found that he had trouble understanding the word problems that he needed to calculate answers for. I suggested that he should read each sentence separately and write down what the numbers and the labels for them. Also, I suggested he should write each calculation on a separate line so he could follow what the next step needs to be in the calculation. Since this was the first time I looked at his US math skills, I didn't leave him with any extra practice because there was still another make-up US math assignment we didn't get, to since each assignment had many questions and parts to answer. We successfully found a study strategy or a way for him to comprehend the math questions so I would say it is a win. I think we should start focusing on more on implementing this strategy more frequently so he can complete his assignments in a more efficient manner.

We worked through practice geometry problems, reminding the student to refer to the reference sheet when she needs an area or volume formula. She continues to show improvement. I reminded her she can also use her graphing calculator to solve quadratic equations and plug in answer choices on multiple choice problems.

Tutoring review by Marissa in Kirtland Air Force Base, NM
The student and I reviewed her homework, which was on continued practice of properties of multiplication and division. We also reviewed these concepts in some worksheets that I brought. She understands all of the properties well, the only one she needs practice in is identifying the distributive property of multiplication. We will go over that some more next week. We then started working on long division, breaking it down step by step. She seems to grasp concepts.
