Recent ACCUPLACER College-Level Math Tutoring Session Notes
This was my final session with this student before she takes the college math placement exam. We went through most of a difficult (and long) practice test. She is doing so well compared to where she started. She still gets tripped up by negative signs and cancelling sometimes when she shouldn't, but is getting the concepts. I found a more detailed breakdown of the test and how well she needs to score. Based on that, I am confident that she will do well on this test.
I had the student finish what was left of his homework and we went through the answers. He needed clarification on many of the exponent rules we went through in our last session so I assigned him some homework on the same rules. We did problems on all of the homework sheets so that he had example problems to look on to.
We worked through concepts on the Accuplacer practice exam. Concepts reviewed included: adding/subtracting integers, identifying terms, combining like terms, distributive property with both positive and negative integers, absolute values, and exponents.
I encouraged the student to use a test prep website to watch videos and work additional problems until she is confident with the material.
She stated she needs additional sessions. We will tentatively schedule for next week.
Today, I brought several worksheets to review the steps for solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable with the student. We worked several of the problems together. I would show her the steps, then she would work some on her own with me watching how she did. Corrections to mistakes were immediate and positive. I left her the sheets and the answers so she could have more practice. We made arrangements to meet on Wednesday.
We worked on a variety of problems on a practice exam. The student is strong in many areas, but she wants to practice more examples that involve factoring polynomials. She also knows to watch out for small errors that involve positive and negative signs. She is self driven, motivated, and has a good sense of her own strengths and areas for improvement.
We reviewed multiplication and division from previous sessions and covered the elementary algebra problems that the student can do easily. We also worked on strategies to use with problems that she cannot solve completely but can reason for a better educated guess. I sent her links to specific practice related to elementary algebra problems. She has improved vastly from the 1st session on the arithmetic portion of the test.
