Oshawa 9th Grade Writing Tutoring FAQ
Much of the composition that your child has done before high school has been limited to short passages that generally test the grammatical concepts that he or she is learning at a given time. With high school writing, however, it becomes increasingly necessary to focus on your child's logical and rhetorical skills in order to help him or her craft persuasive and cohesive arguments in writing. This transition can be very difficult for many students, but it is critical to your child's future that he or she learns to communicate well in this manner. While many students benefit from a classroom-based education, there are a number who require different learning approaches in order to make sense of various concepts. Failing to understand these concepts can cause students to become frustrated, confused, and disenchanted with the learning experience as a whole. If your child is someone who is struggling with writing, working under the guidance of a private writing tutor could be just what they need to build up their proficiency as well as their confidence.
By contacting Varsity Tutors, you can receive help finding a tutor in your area who is qualified to teach ninth-grade writing. Watch as your student benefits from a completely customizable lesson plan that is specifically tailored to suit their goals, strengths, personality, and learning style. For most struggling students, working with a private tutor is the key to strengthening skills and feeling positive about studying.
Your student will likely be assigned specific writing topics, especially in English class, that will require proficiency in writing arguments or analyses. Your tutor can help develop the foundational skills necessary for working on such assignments. In addition, your tutor can focus on the particular skills that need further development, giving your child targeted attention and exercises, from citing sources to crafting a thesis. It is a difficult and time-consuming process to evaluate a person's writing, and private tutoring is the best option for such assessment. By diagnosing your student's writing tendencies early in their high school experience, your child can avoid frustration in later courses as the curriculum builds. Teachers simply may not have the time to complete a close analysis of each student's written work.
Working with a private writing tutor gives your child the chance to build a professional relationship with the instructor. By knowing this, the tutor is able to pay close attention to a number of important details regarding your child's writing abilities, and is able to present thoughtful suggestions and constructive critiques. Unlike classroom-based learning, where students are often given impersonal responses and brief notes covering areas that need improvement, a private tutor is able to provide important feedback and even tailor a special learning plan to help your child overcome any academic challenges blocking the way. This is one way that private lessons are superior at making sure your student learns the necessary skills to express themselves in an eloquent manner.
Given the prevalence of writing on the ACT, college applications, and the SAT, it is critically important that your child is an able communicator. Like most skills, these matters take time and effort to foster. Begin to apply such effort today to ensure that your child is strongly equipped to succeed in his or her future writing. Your tutor is more than happy to work around your busy schedule, so that your child doesn't sacrifice important study time. Moreover, you can choose to have lessons in the comfort of your own home or any other location around town. If your child is too busy to meet a tutor, or doesn't feel comfortable with in-person lessons, you can also have sessions face-to-face online using the Varsity Tutors live platform. Contact Varsity Tutors today and let us help you connect with a ninth-grade writing tutor in your area!

What did you cover specifically? I worked with the student on his final English paper.
Did you see any scores/grades to note progress? No.
What was the student struggling with most? Creating a solid Thesis statement, following the rubric, to include all of the rules required for the paper.
Did you leave them with any extra practice? Yes, he is going to show his professor his new Thesis statement today, and we will work together again tonight, on the remainder of the paper.
Any concerns from this session? No, he was focused and organized.
We went over the requirements of a persuasive essay. Then the student wrote an outline and essay on the topic I provided to him. We read through it and assessed it together. In addition, I gave him a creative writing exercise.
We went through the student's binders and organized them. I gave him recommendations for putting tabbed indices in his binders based on subjects. We concluded the session with work on a short writing assignment. I then coached the student through the process of organizing his thoughts into an outline to complete the prompt and then assisted him with finding the right words to express his ideas as he wrote out the first draft. He will type up the assignment at home.
We went over how the student should wire her house for her physics project. The majority of the time was spent on working on her Julius Caesar essay. I helped her tweak some parts and add additional information.
The student and I worked on two tasks:
1) A Character Development Assessment of Gwendolyn Brooks's Maud Martha, based on the story's diction. I had him read and annotate the story to highlight key words and phrases. He then drafted his 1-pg assessment of Maud Martha's character.
2) For the remaining time, we did more Final Exam Review leading up to Monday's big test. I re-reminded him to study the Course Terms sheet, because he'll need to use them in his short and essay question answers. I also went over the key action verbs he's likely to see in the questions, such as "outline," "list," "analyze," "justify," and "compare and contrast." I think he's close to ready for his test on Monday, but he has a lot of reviewing he still needs to do.
