Session Summaries by Trigonometry Tutors

Utah, UT Trigonometry tutoring
This session, we went over derivatives. More specifically, we went over some conceptual aspects of derivatives rather than computational aspects. We went over how continuity of functions relate to differentiability. We went over what functions look like when they aren't differentiable at certain points. We went over how to prove that a function is not differentiable at a certain point using limits.

This student demonstrated retention from the previous week and did great work today. We reviewed Greatest Common Factors and Least Common Multiples and were able to work on ratios today. It is clear the student understands numerical relationships and sees lots of patterns in sequences of numbers. And he is retaining what patterns he is looking for when we do different types of problems.

This student is an amazing person, and he's really bright and good at mental math. We were able to cover 5-6 sections in his textbook. He completed his work efficiently, and has a very clear understanding of the math concepts he is currently learning. He took notes of tips I gave him, and was very receptive of my feedback and the work he was doing. I don't have any concerns about his work ethic or his potential success in this class. I look forward to working with him in the future!

This student is covering graphically analyzing functions to determine over what periods the function is increasing or decreasing. Perhaps the most confusing aspect of these types of problems is grasping the concept of (-?,?). I emphasized the concept of how when a function changes from increasing to decreasing (or vice versa), that the period must be notated with soft brackets as the slope at that precise value is 0, so it is neither increasing or decreasing at that point. The student now seems to have a much stronger understanding of increasing or decreasing functions.

This student is delightful to work with. She is smart, grasps concepts quickly, and enjoys the creativity in creating our own math problems and working on extensions of questions from the workbooks. We worked on the four major topics from last week: time, money, word problems, and subtraction using grouping. We focused more on time and money, since we had focused more on word problems and subtraction last week. We will continue to practice on time, as adding and subtracting time isn't intuitive to her yet. It's great to see her confidence growing as she feels more in command of calculations, and she seems to be having fun, as she even noted the time flies during our sessions!

Utah, UT Trigonometry tutoring
This student is in the fifth grade and had a worksheet on division and estimation. She seemed to know the steps when prompted. I gave her a few independent problems on a lower level. I gave her skills to help her remember the steps (multiply, subtract, bring down the number), as well as estimation to help her in long division problems. She knows how to set up division word problems. She was very great to work with, and persisted with the task until completion.
