Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Carolina in Vernon Hills, IL
The session was spent playing catch-up and seeing what she should focus on for the next couple of months. I had assigned her a full practice test over break, and we went over everything she got wrong/was unsure about. She actually did really well and only missed a couple questions in each section. We talked a lot about the timing of the essay because she felt unsure about it going into the practice test. I encouraged her to make use of an outline if she's not sure how to proceed on a topic. She was feeling very confident with how she did on the practice, and I think our primary focus for a bit will be on getting her comfortable with the timing of the exam and doing more practice to familiarize her with the material more. We finished the session by completing a timed math section from another practice test. I asked her to complete the writing section chapter practice and to start on practice test 2.

SAT Tutoring review by Doron in Vernon Hills, IL
The student and I continued to work on the critical reading section together. On the first section of practice exam nine, he did remarkably well. He finished the exam with five minutes to spare, and with his extra time, he corrected two questions he currently had marked wrong. The end result was a score of a 22/24, which is wonderful. However, when we moved onto the next section in this practice exam, he only managed to score a 12/24 with one minute of time remaining. While sections can vary in difficulty, it seems what tripped him up was that most of the incorrect answers were the result of sloppy reading (I'd say that was responsible for 2/3 of the errors). When we discussed each error, he was able to pick the correct answer easily and was somewhat mute as to why he didn't pick the correct answer in the first place. My instinct is that he is rushing through the passages too quickly. While this might not always result in a bad score, as seen in the first practice exam, it becomes very problematic for passages that demand very close reading. My recommendation is that he has to practice, on his own, timed reading for accuracy. For our next session, he will complete the last section of this practice exam, and then we will transition to the writing component of the exam.

SAT Tutoring review by Sienna in Vernon Hills, IL
We spent a lot of time on vocabulary questions and reading passages. We also spent a little bit of time on math and on questions where you have to correct sentences or improve paragraphs of writing. The student had a good attitude toward the material; he was attentive and cooperative. I am about to email some diagnostic tests to him so we can get an even better sense of how to allocate our time in future sessions in order to maximize benefits. He did a really good job using context clues in the reading passages. I think spending some extra time studying vocabulary words could be really beneficial for him. The strategies we discussed included eliminating answers you know to be incorrect, looking for context clues, looking for known roots in unknown vocabulary words (or thinking of known words that sound similar to unknown vocabulary words), and testing the given solution options to see if they make sense. Next time we meet, he and I will spend a bit more time on math and vocabulary. We will also spend time on anything on which his diagnostic tests indicate that he might need work. It was really lovely to meet him and I will look forward to working together in the future.
