Test Prep Tutoring review by Micaela in Vernon Hills, IL
The student and I worked through some of the problems from the set I assigned him last week. We concentrated on solid geometry and functions, especially concerning symbols. He is very quick, and will complete problems well with a little direction. We also looked at some vocab in context questions, and the student should prepare some critical reading problems for me for next time.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Kristyn in Vernon Hills, IL
For this session, the student and I covered all 5 ACT sections, but spent a majority of the time on English and Writing (essay). We started each section with a review of the extra practice he completed over the past week. First, with science we covered the comparative passage. We talked about different approaches to this type of passage compared to other science passages. Next was Reading. He completed a timed prose passage. For Math, we reviewed a number of geometry formulas as well as working through a few problems. In English, he did fairly well with his extra practice. We also worked through a passage together identifying the grammar rule or reason for each question. We talked a bit about the use and function of phrases in a sentence. Lastly, we talked a bit about the writing section. We talked about how to brainstorm and outline an essay prior to writing as well as essay structure. He and I then talked through 3 separate essay prompts, outlining both sides of the question including thesis, supports, and counter arguments. For extra practice this week, he has 2 science passages, 10 math problems, 2 English passages, and 1 writing prompt.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Victoria in Vernon Hills, IL
We worked entirely on the writing section today, both the essay portion and the multiple choice portion. The student showed me the essay he had written as homework based on our conversation from last week. He did a better job in this essay of picking a distinct position; however, his thesis still seemed more of a yes/no answer to the prompt, rather than presenting an angle on the issue. Because of this, his body paragraphs did not go very in-depth and he felt like he was just repeating generalizations from the news rather than making a point. We conceptually reworked the essay to bring forth new examples and develop an angle based on them. His homework is to re-write the same essay, including pre-writing again, to develop a thesis that allows him to show off his critical thinking. In the multiple choice section, he made a lot of progress this session. He knows all the basic rules of grammar, so we mainly reviewed particular rules such as "over/more than," "like/such as," and "whose/that's." We also reviewed the rules behind questions where he hesitated and answered correctly, including matching dependent and independent clauses as well as parallelism. He said that reviewing the rules themselves was particularly helpful since he questions his natural sense of American English structure.
