I would try to relate the concept being taught to something familiar or tangible to get them excited/engaged.... I would use both formative and summative assessments to determine if students are learning the material.

I have over 30 years of experience working with students who need support in their math classes. It is my favorite way to engage with students and with math. I like to make sure students see how ideas are connected, and help them to understand rather than memorize.
