How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

The ACT may be one of the most important exams you will ever take. It is used to help determine what colleges or universities will accept you. The exam is also used by many merit-based scholarships to help decide the most qualified candidate. The ACT might end up being the determining factor in what colleges you may be able to attend. Thankfully, Varsity Tutors could help you find an ACT tutor in Providence, RI, who could help you get the best score you can.

Our educational directors in Providence can match you with an ACT tutor who could help improve your study skills as well as your ACT knowledge. The exam is split into four parts: Mathematics, English, Science, and Reading. There is also an optional Writing section that is required for many college applications, which requires you to complete an essay in a set period of time. Because the exam covers such a diverse range of necessary skills, nearly every student could struggle more in at least one of the sections. When Varsity Tutors selects a tutor for you, we will consider which subject area you struggle with most and find you a tutor who specializes in that section. We will also select a tutor whose teaching style matches your learning style, allowing the session to flow more naturally and increasing learning retention. The immediate feedback and assistance you receive will prevent you from learning information incorrectly, and a tutor may be able to give you the necessary tips and tricks to help increase your speed in the timed testing environment.

Providence, RI ACT tutoring
Today we reviewed two more reading passages that the student completed, and she also gave me a new essay to score. For our next meeting, she will complete two more reading passages and will continue to work on the English practice test. This practice test should help her improve her current grammatical and usage/mechanics skills when looking at the English passages. We also discussed the top test-taking strategies for the English session.

The student worked on English passages. I left her with three more passages for homework. Rather than have her do them in order, I divided them up based on grammar concepts. She could see the various questions that all have to do with grammar. She knows grammar well and this will help her gain confidence. We also practiced two reading passages, one of which she did well on the first try. We did some practice science passages both together and on her own, and she excelled at those.

The student and I did a review of the test as a whole and practiced the English and math sections. She seems to be strong on the English portion, so we probably won't focus as much on that subject. We worked on a few math topics (basic trig, special right triangles, Pythagorean theorem) and will continue to brush up on her math skills. She has several homework assignments and I'm confident that she'll do well on them!

I gave her some tips for tackling difficult passages, and we discussed her answers afterward. Next, she and I went over the science passage she completed for homework. With the remaining time, she worked on a math section. I explained any incorrect answers or confusing problems.

Today we mainly focused on writing and math. We read through a sample essay and analyzed it a bit. Math-wise, we looked at some geometry problems. We reviewed the Pythagorean triples as well as special right triangles: 30-60-90 and 45-45-90. We practiced problems that involved formulas for area of a trapezoid, triangle, and parallelogram. We also practiced comparing a ratio change from one formula to another.
