Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Orange, CA Physics tutoring
We reviewed for her test on vectors: defining magnitude and direction, drawing the correct angles, adding/subtracting with components and adding/subtracting graphically. She had a few questions that we went over, and she seemed to understand after a few examples. She's doing very well with finding the components and then finding the resultant vector from the components.

Today I met with the student for the first time. We went over the equations for capacitors, resistors, and dc circuits in preparation for his exam. Then we solved some of the problems for his homework. We were not able to cover the Thermodynamics homework, so we have another appointment for Saturday.

We covered springs and pendulums and wave behavior. The student was struggling the most with pendulums, but even that didn't give him much trouble. He seemed to understand the material once it was explained to him. I told him to make sure that he always includes units while doing calculations, since they can help reduce mistakes. He still has some more of his review packet that he will complete on his own.

The student's course is a course in classical mechanics. His final project for this course is to produce a short paper analyzing a creative extension of a typical mechanics problem. He already knew he wanted to do something based on pendulums and/or springs, so we spent most of the time brainstorming different systems, and then working out their Lagrangians and equations of motion, in order to decide which would be the most suitable for the project. He will likely use some version of a double torsion pendulum.

Orange, CA Physics tutoring
Went over Newton's method, linear approximation, and some trigonometric derivatives. The student seemed to pick up Newton's method pretty quickly which is great because it's a relatively new concept for a high schooler and he did great with that. He had a little bit of trouble with linearization but he said it made a lot more sense as we worked through all the problems. Overall, great session and we went over everything he wanted to review.

Orange, CA Physics tutoring
Today we worked on conservation of momentum problems in one and two dimensions. The student did pretty well with this. We discussed the difference between elastic and inelastic collisions - one conserves kinetic energy while the other does not.
