Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Lakewood, CA Physics tutoring
We went over new material on momentum, impulse and conservation of momentum. We practiced solving problems that involved material from previous chapters (energy and acceleration due to gravity), and reviewed the difference between impulse and force. We went through the three types of collision problems - elastic, inelastic and explosions. I showed her how to draw a picture before using the equations, and that seemed to help her. She is prepared for her quiz.

The student and I began the session by reviewing her final that she just got back. She did very well and received an A- on the test. We spent time going over the problems and how she got to the answer. Next, we began covering heat and energy which is the next chapter in her book. We discussed the equations and did problems together. Once she did a few questions with me she was able to complete them on her own with minimal help.

The student completed a conceptual review worksheet on energy, work, power, velocity, and acceleration. He knew the formulas by heart and has a solid grasp of the conceptual aspect of mechanics. He offered his own take on scenarios involving these quantities and was rather spot on. We worked through some problems, and he has gotten better at setting them up.

The pupil has a physics test on vectors and velocity Monday. We worked on distance vs. time graphs as well as interpreting velocity vs. time graphs. We also covered vector addition and subtraction while using them to work on velocity and acceleration word problems. He will redo the packet we worked on to practice the material and hopefully set him up to ace the test.

We continued reviewing free-body diagrams using homework problems. We discussed the difference between mass and weight and how each might vary based on location. We used examples from the text to demonstrate force and the resulting movement of objects in various scenarios. The student was very good at drawing free-body diagrams but had some confusion with the force of gravity. I explained how gravity affects the object and how its vector should be drawn. I also introduced circular motion, velocity and centripetal acceleration.
