During today's session, we discussed the student's progress in his English class, especially considering he just got his first report card. We then focused on examining the text of a book his class is reading, discussing themes and the three chapters his class has read since Tuesday. I gave him more pointers on how to pick out important sections and key in on what he needs to make real note of, and we discussed ongoing character and theme developments.

This Monday, the student and I talked broadly about the courses of his that require a great deal of writing. English class assigns a 1 page paper every week or two, a paper which makes up the bulk of his writing assignments. He showed me one such graded assignment, and we talked about the teacher's notes. We ended the lesson with a drill involving concepts from his English paper. History does not currently require much writing, but he informed me that he expects a 5 page paper at some point in December. Religion, his final potentially writing intensive course, has not yet involved any essay work. For our next meeting, I have asked him to bring his planner, a pair of scissors and a set of blank notecards.

Today we went over two worksheets that I made - one on conclusion paragraphs, and one on precise word choice. The student said he found the word choice worksheet really helpful. He also mentioned that he started reading for fun outside of class, so I assigned a homework assignment for him to pick out 15 new words and write them in the journal I gave him along with their definitions so he can begin to build his vocabulary. Next week we will go over the 15 words, go through his journal entries and try to pick the best word choice, and I'll bring a worksheet on the evidence/ explanation section.
