During this session, the student and I began reviewing vector notation. We worked out mapping of vector dynamics onto a graph, applying i, j, and k notation to the vectors, factoring external forces into the equation, and finding the resultant vectors. We also worked on calculating the dot product and calculating the angle between vectors.

The student and I did a review of material that included conics such as parabolas, circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas. She completed her homework assignment, so we reviewed some of the problems. I gave her a worksheet that listed the formulas in simpler fashion. In physics, we went over concepts such as work, momentum, and mechanical energy. We worked through kinetic and potential energy problems.

This was my first session with the student, so I used it to mostly gauge where she was at in her pre-calculus class and what she needed help with the most. We spent the session going over her class PowerPoint and notes concerning logarithms. She was pretty comfortable with these, and did well on the practice problems.

We reviewed compound interest and radioactive decay since the student felt that she got these problems wrong on her recent Pre-Calculus test. The student is doing well with setting up the compound interest equations and we worked on familiarizing her with the algebra to isolate the rate that is being raised to a power. For the radioactive decay problems, we went over what the half-life of a material means and how to set up the equation using the half-life. We also covered some of the beginnings of trigonometry, mostly regarding angles, the definition of a radian, how to convert between radians and degrees, and how these topics will relate back to the geometry of triangles.
