Major topics covered were under the category of ionic compounds. We discussed the difference between cations and anions, typical ionization behavior of compounds as predicted by the periodic table, electron configurations, atomic structure, and how to interpret changes in atomic structure in ionic atoms (number of electrons changes, as protons are stuck in the nucleus)
This was my first session with this student. He said he did well on his first exam but failed the last one and has one tomorrow. He has two chapters that were going to be tested and he needed help with rates of reactions. We went over first order and second order reactions and how to determine them. We also looked at how the concentrations changes and stays constant and how to determine the rate of reaction from that. We practiced some problems and he felt better about them once we completed. We will meet next Wednesday and Thursday and cover the next two chapters that will be on his following test.
We talked about Aufbau principle, Pauli exclusion principle, Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity, Heisenberg uncertainty principle and de Broglie equation. We also went in detail about quantum numbers, shapes of orbitals and radial probability distribution graphs, and electronegativity. Lastly, we went talked about Slater's rule and its application.
In this session, we reviewed a quiz over posology. She is struggling a bit with the math, especially with the more complex, multi-stepped problems, so we took the time to work through some problems. I will be getting her more resources to work on for the math portion. We will continue to do extra practice next session as well.
This was my first session with the student. I arrived a few minutes early in order to speak with her mom about her expectations and goals for our tutoring. The student and I covered the rock cycle, specifically the differences between sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. We first used her study packet to go over the concepts, and I had the student read most of the packet out loud and asked her questions to check her understanding. Then we did her homework assignment on the topic.
Today the student and I worked on math and civics and then brainstormed more for a science project. It was a productive session, and we came up with some good ideas for her to go forward with.
