History Tutoring review by Brett in Palos Hills, IL
I had the student write about a few topics just to get her to practice the process of putting thoughts onto paper. I first asked her to write a thank you note to a friend who gave her a pack of bitter melon-flavored chewing gum as a gift. After she worked on this for a bit, I had her write a note to a new student at her school, offering advice and words of encouragement. These activities served a few purposes. The first, and most basic, was to simply get her to write. Perhaps the best way to become a better writer is to write, so having her think about and then write quick, simple assignments will help her practice writing. More importantly, we talked about the fundamental aspects of writing, specifically thinking about one's audience, the purpose of what one is writing, and what, precisely, the writer wants to say. We discussed these concepts as they related to the brief writing exercises I gave her today, but we spent more time talking about how they are important when it comes to academic writing. I think she is going to have to re-write the essay she had been working on for me, so we talked about how these ideas in relation to that specific work. Hopefully she will have this essay done by next Wednesday, when we will discuss it, as well as the new work she will have for her social studies class.

History Tutoring review by Scott in Palos Hills, IL
For this session, we worked on 5th grade social studies curriculum to prepare for the student's upcoming test. We covered the topics of history, civics, geography, and processes of government. I think it was a good session overall. Tomorrow, I will go more in-depth with the material and use more practice tests.

History Tutoring review by John in Palos Hills, IL
During this session, we went over a new chapter in the student's social studies book. This section covers Latin America; she will have a quiz on it in the next week or so. She had already reviewed the first two sections of the chapter in her social studies class. We began by reviewing the key terms of those sections before moving on the third section. Her homework was to review the third section and complete two worksheets. Using the worksheet questions as a guide, I had her read and skim through sections of the chapter where she thought she would find the answer. This encourages her to engage in a sort of "picture walk," whereby she can quickly glance over a page or set of pages and use the graphics and sub headers to discern whether or not the page(s) will address the question. As usual, she did very well and shows an enthusiasm for learning and completing tasks. She benefits greatly from guided discussion and reading, which helps her to keep focus on the subject matter. We will continue to review social studies sections prior to quizzes/tests and will pick back up again with 50 states review in May.
