Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed two main topics. First, we went over carbonyls as nucleophiles: alpha-H acidity and the enolate ion. We discussed the aldol and Claisen condensation, their steps and differences. We cross-linked the Claisen condensation to the breakdown of fatty acids to acetate. Next, we reviewed amines and proteins: nomenclature; physical properties, synthetic pathways, and reactivity. We discussed the general structure and classification of amino acids, and important ones to recognize. We discussed the isoelectric point, and the orders of protein structure and its determinants."
"The student and I continued our MCAT physiology review. We started with the reproductive system, focusing on the anatomy of both male and female, as well as spermatogenesis and oogenesis. We then talked about the role of hormones (FSH and LH) for each and their effects on the structures and functions of the reproductive system. From there we talked about the menstrual cycle (follicular phase, ovulation, luteal phase, menstruation) and the role of the hormones GnRH, FSH, LH, estrogen, and progesterone in the process. Then we moved on to embryology, from fertilization to neurulation. After talking about fetal respiration and circulation, we moved on to the musculoskeletal system. We covered all the concepts of this system from the structure of bones to the neuromuscular junction, and the different types of muscles. We also talked about energy reserves (creatine phosphate and myoglobin) and connective tissue. We ended the session by talking about muscle-bone interactions. Next session we are going to talk about the digestive system, skin, kidneys, and the rest of the nervous system."
"We did mainly some data sufficiency with straight math thrown in. Keep looking for shortcuts!! (i.e. reducible fractions and "hidden" quadratics)"
