Recent Mecklenburg County Calculus 2 Tutoring Session Notes
We discussed problems involving application to integration. That was where we had to set up integrals representing the volume or area enclosed by several functions. On these problems, I gave the student a basic understanding of what to do when tackling those problems. After the session, he said that integration is now making a lot more sense and I was happy to see that he is learning from this tutoring session.
We went over the rest of the material in chapter 8 which was using more trig substitutions, partial fractions, L'Hopital's rule and finally improper integrals. By now she should be familiar with a ton of integration techniques.
Worked on approximating integrals with left, right, and middle approximations. He is completely competent in that now. Also reviewed more trig sub and partial fraction decomposition.
Improper integrals and applications of integrals including volume of integral around axes using washer and shell methods, work and averages in Statistics (Mean Value Theorem). She picked up the volume problems easily. She had obviously worked problems and just needed some insight into the setup. I sent some pages with worked examples from my textbook to assist her.
We used definite integrals to calculate volumes of solids that are rotationally symmetric. We calculated center of mass and various quantities from density functions. Homework was reviewed and various points from lecture notes were clarified.
We got to know each other somewhat, established a schedule, and went over what the course had covered so far. Then, we discussed what the student had recently learned about sequences and series, and worked through several practice problems.
