Recent Tutoring Session Reviews

Biology Tutoring review by Christina in Concord, NC
Today, for most of the session, we reviewed cellular respiration for the student's exam on Monday (went in depth on the products in each stage, differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration, and descriptions of glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation). To prepare, I suggested making note cards for the basic terms as well as talking through each of the stages over and over again until they are committed to memory. We also briefly started the topic of cell division and mitosis/meiosis since that is what will be covered this week after the exam.

Biology Tutoring review by Anna in Concord, NC
Today the student and I worked on dihybrid Punnett squares. She did well with remembering each step perfectly in the process of listing out the genotypes and phenotypes. Her attitude was positive. I included assigning shapes to different phenotypes as a study skill. I also incorporated some color coding. I showed her how to do a tree diagram, ultimately combining the two different traits.

Biology Tutoring review by Gabriel in Concord, NC
Today's session was a two part session. The first covered new material that the student is working on in the area of basic genetics and heredity. We worked out some Punnett squares and discussed topics such as incomplete dominance and blood types. We worked out a few scenarios where knowing your blood type can be very important and discussed the dangers of mixing the wrong type of blood. The second half of the session focused on getting prepared for the mid-term exams. I went over a study plan with her that included going over and correcting old tests, going over the old class notes, and taking practice exams. Her exam is in about two weeks, and as we get closer to that time, we will be focused on test preparation. She should do rather well.

Biology Tutoring review by Merna in Concord, NC
We have gone over few concepts including fossils, natural selection, evolution and taxonomy. The student understood the natural selection and evolution concepts very well, and she was struggling with taxonomy and fossils a bit. We went over the teacher's slides and some of the questions on the study guide.

Biology Tutoring review by Elizabeth in Concord, NC
At this session, the student and I reviewed all of the previous topics for this semester, including DNA replication, transcription, translation, mutations, and genetics (Punnett squares) in preparation for her final exam. I asked her questions to see if she remembered the concepts, and we did some practice problems. I also quickly went over the next topic she will be learning in class to expose her to the new material she will be learning.
