Session Summaries by Algebra Tutors

Algebra Tutoring review by Kaitlyn in Shelby County, TN
In this session, we talked about the student's recent test, on which he achieved an 86%. We did some more review of operations with fractions and negatives, as these were the concepts he had the most trouble with on the exam. We then did some work with multi-step equations, which was the next concept in his course. His attitude was good. The strategies of canceling during multiplication and checking signs after every step were emphasized repeatedly. The 86% on his exam suggests that he has made a lot of progress with the various concepts, and he is learning to solve equations very quickly now that the ground work is in place.

Algebra Tutoring review by Merry in Shelby County, TN
She and I covered three sections in her textbook in order to study for her upcoming quiz. She is a quick learner, and interacts well with me. There were many areas in which I needed to correct or teach her about these subjects, but she was good at adjusting and successfully using the new material. I think she will do well on her quiz if she remembers what we did together and does some practice problems before the quiz. I also recommended to her that she read her textbook, because her professor isn't teaching her enough for her to understand the material.

Algebra Tutoring review by Elaine in Shelby County, TN
She and I did practice problems to review the concepts she learned in geometry class. We worked on the following concepts: finding angle measure of an arc that goes through the center or edge of a circle, percentages word problems, finding where an arc begins and ends, and solving equations. She did well on the problems and achieved a good understanding of the concepts. For chemistry, we reviewed the atomic models, Dalton's atomic theory, Rutherford's experiment, Millikan's experiment, cathode ray experiment, and types of substances and mixtures.

Algebra Tutoring review by Miranda in Shelby County, TN
She and I went over her past two quizzes. She'd mostly done well with a couple small mistakes and one problem that she didn't understand. I showed her how to do it and gave her one like it for practice. We also went through her latest packet on structure of polynomial graphs. I showed her how to use Desmos to graph.

Algebra Tutoring review by Laura in Shelby County, TN
She and I worked on polynomials, attempting to get ahead of her class a little bit. She told me she had a test on absolute values and inequalities Wednesday, and she thought she had done well on it without any last-minute cramming. If her self-assessment is right (or even nearly-right), it is very reassuring. Her Algebra 1 class in 8th grade covered polynomials, so the material is somewhat familiar to her, but her skills were rusty, and she was easily frustrated. I was able to encourage her to practice some simple problems until they became easy for her, and then scale up to medium-hard ones.
