1) The concepts we covered were the following: a) Finding slopes of lines between two points with given ordinates, b) Simplifying algebraic expressions, and c) Solving for unknowns with given ratios. 2) The student was engaged and committed to learning the concepts. 3) I demonstrated to the student how to work out the problems, and I left a few strategies. One was for how to find slopes of lines when given two sets ordinates in which the general slope is m=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1). Another was for how to simplify algebraic expressions, i.e., combining like terms and constants. Finally, I showed her how to find an unknown within given ratios like 2/3=4/a in which one cross multiplies to rewrite the expression as 2a=3*4=12; hence, this makes a=6. 4) The student expressed a better understanding of the concepts at the end of the session.

After completing homework that involved placing linear equations in the form Y=mx+b to more easily graph them, The student got some additional practice at manipulating linear equations to isolate Y, including ones with decimals and fractions. Further expanding the lesson, I introduced graphing inequalities and how their graphs differ from the equations he had been manipulating earlier. We finished with two practice problems that involved graphing linear equations and inequalities.

As per usual, we spent the session going over the student's weekly homework. The subject matter was the same as it has been for the last week or two: solving and graphing inequalities. Today, though, the problems got slightly tougher.

At the outset we had 25(?) problems assigned, and I think we got about 18-ish of them taken care of. Many old problems with new faces today: Area and circumference of a circle; area and perimeter of an odd polygon; percentage -> decimal and fraction; similarity of nested triangles; mean/median/mode/range; and statistics question. The first two that we answered were fun for me because the question they asked was revealed by deduction. The student was a great sport today, and his activity level today was also really good.

Because we haven't had a session for some time, I spent half the time reviewing the lessons I've taught to the student before. I was concerned at first that she may not remember, but it turns out she does. She still has issues being confident in her memory and how to solve a problem, but I still encourage her to attempt these problems and get the method down. I gave her practice problems related to each lesson and worked out a lesson plan.
