Session Summaries by ACT Math Tutors

ACT Math Tutoring review by Ian in Tucson, AZ
For our last session, we talked a little bit about some practice English work that she did, and we focused on practicing some math problems, specifically with trigonometry. We reviewed trig concepts but also talked about tactics and keys like checking back in with the question and figures when things seem off and always verifying that the answer that is chosen matches the wording of the question (e.g. if the question asks for the perimeter of a figure and we have only calculated the missing side of that figure, we haven't answered the question). We finished this session by talking a little more about the test and test-day, and I will be sending an email in the next couple of days with tips and reminders.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Michael in Tucson, AZ
The student and I finished going over the science section. She seemed to have a greater understanding of how to do these questions than she did before, which is good. Afterwards, we talked about general test-taking strategies. Since she probably won't be able to complete all of the questions on the test, we talked about focusing more on answering the questions she knows how to do, and make sure that she gets those right, while guessing on the other questions. We also talked through the writing section, where I told her what kinds of sources she can cite as arguments. Additionally, I told her to write a thesis statement in the introduction and repeat it in the conclusion. Finally, as general advice, I told her to relax the night before the test and get a good night's sleep, along with eating breakfast the day of the test and remembering her ID, ticket, and calculator with batteries.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Breta in Tucson, AZ
We spent the entire time going over the practice Math section of the ACT test that I had the student take as homework. He scored a 29 on the practice test! There were quite a few questions that he was not so sure about so we went over those as well as the ones he got wrong. We also did problems similar to the ones he did not initially understand to make sure they now make sense. It was great to see him comprehending material for the first time! We did discuss some final-last-minute testing things about what he should be sure to bring on test day to increase his success! The biggest struggling point was ratios and when to use them, but he was doing MUCH better by the end.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Janet in Tucson, AZ
The student had completed another practice test since our last session. His scores are consistently going up, with English, Reading, and Science all 3-6 points higher than they were initially. We reviewed the areas he had missed, and spotted trends in the kinds of questions he missed for English. Specifically, he needs to be wary of parallelism questions, subject verb agreement, and the 'insert or relocate sentence/paragraph' questions. On the actual exam, he is to flag these questions as he comes across them, and then carefully review them in his remaining time. On the practice tests, he's found that he can catch a few wrong answers by using the time to review instead of relaxing. After we finished reviewing, I set him to doing a first-third test from the ACT prep book. A 1/3rd test is literally 1/3rd of the actual test, and score projection by multiplying correct answers times 3. In part because we were doing a first-third (starting at the beginning and not the middle or end of the sections), the questions were easier and he had an exceptionally high score. We reviewed study strategies for the next few days.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Miranda in Tucson, AZ
The student took an entire practice ACT over the weekend. She scored 25 on math, 24 each on English and science (hurray!), and a 19 on reading. We went through all the problems she missed on the reading exam. I encouraged her to check out ACT vocab lists, since some of the problems came from not knowing the words. We also talked about how important it is to take time on these questions, even if she can't finish the whole test. If she rushes, she's going to miss more than if she spends a little bit more time on them. I also told her to make sure any notes she's writing on the side of her passages are actually useful to her. I got the sense that she was writing them there because she'd been told to, but wasn't making them help her. Writing complete sentences and/or linking them back to specific lines in the passage should help the notes work for her.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Elisa in Tucson, AZ
Today was our last session before the student takes the ACT. Last week she requested reviewing some chemistry passages from the science section, so today I brought 4 chemistry passages and 4 conflicting viewpoints passages (her second least favorite type) for us to review. She is sometimes confused by the structure of the experiments but when we talk through the design her confusion usually abates. She has also gotten much more comfortable with the conflicting viewpoints passages. Taking notes in the margins helps her to quickly reference the main points of each of the passages while answering the questions, which allows her to move through the questions in much less time. We ended our session by talking through her test taking techniques, especially in terms of time management. She said she feels pretty good about the test, and I feel that she is well prepared and quite capable of doing very well. It has been a pleasure working with her and I wish her luck!
