I’m an author of historical fiction and a 2005 graduate of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland where I earned an MA in Geography and International Relations. (I am American, so I don’t have an accent!) I’ve completed a teaching methods course and am qualified in all the social sciences such as History, Geography, Economics, Government, and Psychology. I also spent a summer teaching Physical Science at the high school level as a volunteer in Kenya … without electricity or textbooks.
As an experienced writer and editor, I can help with essays, personal statements, writing technique and mechanics, as well as reading/study skills. I truly believe that every student can become a good writer with individual attention and encouragement.
In school I was (and still am) a bookworm and one who sincerely enjoys helping others to grow in knowledge. As a veteran test-taker, I can help with college entrance exam test prep (ACT, SAT, and the subject tests), using both conceptual understanding and test-specific strategies to raise scores. From my own experience, I know that scores can go up significantly with studying and tutoring.
My teaching style is focused on engaging the student and using their own unique learning style and base of knowledge to move forward. I look for ways to help a student connect with the material and use appropriate study techniques to improve performance, whether it be a letter grade or a test score.
In my free time I love to write, cook for my friends, play computer games, go hiking, and hang out with my adorable pet ball python, Sybil.
