Session Summaries by ACT Tutors

ACT Tutoring review by Jennifer in Tucson, AZ
The student and I completed the math section of practice test 4, which we had started the last session, and worked on two English passages and one reading passage from practice test 2. She should be fine with more practice.

ACT Tutoring review by Brianna in Tucson, AZ
The student forgot what the assigned homework was, so he did the science of test two again. I had him do the math portion during today's section. One thing I noticed is that he maybe wrote something down for one problem. He doesn't work out the problems on paper, and prefers to attempt them in his head. Regardless, I told him I would bring flashcards to our next session with the important formulas.

ACT Tutoring review by Joseph in Tucson, AZ
The student did not do as well on his practice ACT Math test as he had hoped, but my explanations of the problems he missed helped his understanding tremendously. Before our next session, I've asked the student to do a complete practice ACT. The other student, on the other hand, only missed a single Math problem, but we had expected such a strong showing from him. He and I then worked on more ACT Science before wrapping up for the day.

ACT Tutoring review by Beth in Tucson, AZ
Today I taught the student a lesson on measuring angles in radians. We calculated the sine, cosine, and tangent of triangles measured in radians. The student has some flashcards that she can use to memorize some common trigonometry facts. We also worked on finding the key information in science questions. We still have a lot of work to do on that topic!

ACT Tutoring review by Lauren in Tucson, AZ
Today the student and I reviewed and scored the rest of practice test 1. His final composite score was a 22, but some of the sections were not completed under typical time constraints. We then worked on the Reading section. He completed practice test 2's reading section, and we scored it and reviewed it together while discussing strategies for improvement. The three main issues that came up were 1. running out of time to complete the section, 2. answering questions based on instinct rather than evidence in the text, and 3. not reading the text carefully enough to get the main idea. From now on, after each reading passage, the student should be formulating a one sentence summary of the main idea of the passage, and referring back to the text for evidence to support his answers. For homework, the student is completing and scoring the science section of practice test 2.

ACT Tutoring review by Michael in Tucson, AZ
For our initial session we completed an error analysis on the English portion of the student's diagnostic and started on the math portion. Since this was his first experience with the ACT we spent time discussing strategy as well. He is very bright and has a lot of potential.
