Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Test Prep Tutoring review by Rebekah in Tucson, AZ
The student and I spent this session focusing on her weakest session, writing MC. The student had showed a good understanding of the grammar concepts when we discussed them, but she needed practice seeing them in the SAT style questions. The student easily identified a pattern her mistakes. She tends to miss questions about agreement and parallelism. As we practiced, she was able to more easily correct questions she had previously missed. She should show improve in this session on Saturday's test.

The student scored a 31 on his Science test last night, and we shifted gears on a high note into ACT Math. The student's major struggle here is with breaking down problems into manageable chunks and checking his work, so we spent our time working on that, and we'll see how he does on the practice math test tonight.

Altering geometry concepts from the week before, we continued math coverage with a trigonometry lesson. Also, mapped out a plan for the coming weeks. We'll have one more meeting to wrap things up and create a study/review plan for his summer.

The student and I first chatted about her goals and problem areas for our sessions together. We began work on an SAT essay, choosing a position, developing an outline, and writing a thesis sentence. We are continuing this essay in our next session.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Alyssa in Tucson, AZ
As we near his exam, I want him to get comfortable working in the same order as the SSAT. That is, we started with an essay like the test does. He wrote on the topic "Technology is making the world smaller: agree or disagree?" and did a fantastic job. Then, I had him take a full reading comprehension section. He continues to do in the 70th percentile, which is great, but I'm pushing him to do even better by thoroughly reviewing his missed answers. A lot of it boils down to reading too quickly, even though he has time at the end. I keep reminding him to slow down and be deliberate in his answering. We finished with a PSAT math section. Though they were harder problems than he'll see on the SSAT, I wanted him to get used to budgeting his time and working through difficult problems. I'd rather he feel challenged now, so that the actual test will seem like a breeze. Just two more sessions left!

Test Prep Tutoring review by Ian in Tucson, AZ
For this session, we returned to English for our final review. Did a fast fundamental review of grammar and usage mechanics, corrected an essay edited to contain ACT-relevant language mistakes. We concluded with a practice ACT English section in which I gradually removed supports and decreased prompting. We identified a few grammar and usage rules for the student to keep in mind as potential traps. Overall I would project mid-20s under ideal testing conditions. Very happy with the student's progress to date.
