Writing Tutoring review by LaSara in Lakewood, WA
Today we started the session by reviewing the student's outline for his scientific research paper. I looked over his outline and gave him suggestions and constructive criticism. I reminded him to incorporate effective transitions and to stay away from run-on sentences. Next we reviewed pronouns. I gave him an exercise to test his understanding and he did well. We talked about the difference between the proper use of a comma and semicolon. I gave him some examples to further solidify his understanding. Next he completed an assignment that allowed him to practice using commas and semi colons correctly. He did really well on this assignment. We discussed the problems that he got wrong and I gave him an explanation for each one. Afterwards he worked on two different exercises that required him to identify and correct run-on sentences. He did well on these exercises. Lastly I gave him an opportunity to edit his essay from last session. I instructed him to make corrections and present his final draft at our next session. During the session the student expressed how he felt his writing was getting better. He also stated that he was doing better on his PSAT practice problems.

I went over the student's outline with him, and we discussed how to improve areas where he may run into trouble when he begins writing, and areas where he is definitely on the right path. We're trying to nail down the outline form from the get-go, so that he gets into the habit of starting from an outline every time and proceeding that way.

Writing Tutoring review by Patricia in Lakewood, WA
This was our first session, so we got acquainted and I reviewed with the student and her mother what the goals for our work should be. I looked at samples of her writing, including an essay from last week that I'd asked be emailed to me. In general, she's a good writer for her age. She has correct sentence structure, very few grammatical errors, and adequate content. I identified the writing aspects she should work on: more varied sentence structure, writing more specifically to the prompt, and incorporating more supporting details. She did an editing exercise as part of a diagnostic. To end, I gave her an assignment to write a comparison essay on a set of passages I'd given her.

Writing Tutoring review by Bernadette in Lakewood, WA
During today's session, the student and I began with a writing assignment. I gave him the prompt of what he would do in a situation and how he would react to it. After this, we began to read Hatchet, (chapter 15). This chapter was longer than the others, so it took us a little while to read it. After the reading, we went over vocabulary words from the chapter. He had to write the definitions down by using context clues, not the dictionary. After this we worked on some comprehension questions for the chapter. We also made predictions of what was going to happen next in the book. For next week's session, we will read two chapters before summer break.
