The student and I read her class book together and then worked on spelling so she could do her homework. We finished up by practicing with sight words as that seems to be weaker than her phonetic skills. She did really well-when she doesn't psych herself out she can do anything!

We worked on science, English, and national state and local government tonight. In science we worked again on the experimental analysis and he completed a worksheet on that as well. We worked on an essay about an experience that he has had in his life for English. He wrote a rough draft for that. Then we worked for a long time on a worksheet about the Declaration of Independence. That was kind of hard for him because of the language but in the end he finished the worksheet and understood.

Tutoring review by Janiece in Bonney Lake, WA
Today, the student asked me to teach her about integers. She really wants to understand integers better because she knows she will be encountering them soon. Before we got started, though, I had her organize her notes and assignments by inserting them in their designated place in her notebook to ensure she maintained her organization. We then started our lesson by reviewing the definition of integers, and I utilized the number line to show her how to broaden her view of negative and positive from being greater than or less than to observing them as simply being directional. In the case with a number line, negative simply means go to the left while positive simply means go to the right. When we view the number line as an X-axis and add a Y-axis, we can again view the positive and negative numbers as directional, either going up the Y-axis or going down, respectively. We then went back to the number line to work on adding and subtracting integers. I ended the session by giving her my very simple rules for adding and subtracting integers. And I left her with a few simple integers to practice adding/ subtracting.

The student and I worked on understanding scatterplots. Her class began a new chapter, so I walked her through the different kinds of scatterplots, how to graph points for a scatterplot, and finally how to write an equation given a set of data. I explained to her how to manipulate the point-slope form to a slope-intercept form. I also taught her how to draw the line of best fit and find the slope. By the end of the session, she really understood the concepts.

Most of the problems we worked on today involved finding the base, height, or area of parallelograms; the most difficult ones involved subtracting out areas inside of a parallelogram, but the student completed them fairly quickly.
