Tutoring review by Ari in Richmond Heights, MO
In this lesson, we covered definite integrals, which are essentially antiderivatives with bounds to plug in and subtract. The student found that part most straightforward. There were some tricky questions about rules of integrals and how you can combine based on the bounds. (i.e. integral from a to b + integral from b to c = integral from a to c). After we finished all her textbook problems, she had a pretty solid understanding. In our remaining time, we went back over everything she's learned this semester in preparation for her upcoming exam in a week or two.

We covered areas of Trapezoids, Kites and Rhombuses. She seemed to understand the material. We worked on problems together and I let her work on some herself. I gave her definitions and key things to look at when classifying quadrilateral shapes. We are working toward her quiz this week.

We began by looking at the student's homework writing out the 9 times table. Throughout the session, I quizzed her on three problems (9x9; 9x8; and 9x7). I'm hoping the repetition will push the products into her long-term memory. We worked on improper fractions, reducing fractions, mixed numbers, perimeter and area, symmetry, word problems, measurement and probability. I think she is making progress. She says she is working on measurement in school and that she finds it manageable.

We worked on the concept of the mole, as well as finding weights of samples in amu's. Overall, it looks like the student does understand this material. We also worked on geometry, where the material was about the congruence of polygons. This material he did very well with.

The student has a test coming up on chapter 4 over arithmetic and geometric sequences. We reviewed recognizing the sequences from common difference or ratio, finding the arithmetic equation (using the knowledge of a line a0+dn from her book equation a1+d(n-1), finding the geometric equation, and finding a specified term. She is well prepared for her test. She then worked on her homework for the start of Chapter 5. It was a review of exponents. Since this was our first meeting we ended the session doing a quick review of chapters 1-3 including definition of functions, inequalities (absolute value in particular) and linear equations.

In today's lesson, we discussed and worked on Shakespeare's Hamlet play. We went through Act I and its meanings as well as presented possible essay questions from the act. In addition, we read through Act II Scene I and summarized as well as highlighted key points and inferences. During the session, I presented a PowerPoint presentation to the student explaining the different characters and the theme of "madness" in Hamlet. She did a great job! In order to improve her analytical skills, we will continue to look at and define certain key phrases as well as work on "possible" essay questions from Hamlet. She will definitely bring her grade up.
