Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Michelle in Smyrna, GA
She worked through mental math fact solving of double digit multiplication problems: homework from school. We also worked on her social studies writing project: developing paragraphs from her notes on Rosa Parks. She worked through her math homework, which was about composing an equation of a line, with slope and the Y intercept, by examining a graph or a set of x,y coordinates, then doing the same in reverse. She also worked they her social studies homework on branches and roles of the U.S. government.

Summer Tutoring review by Rasa in Smyrna, GA
For the first hour, we did some math modules on her iPad. Her homework was to do a math module in multiplying fractions, so we did one and then she wanted to jump around and do a few more. We did some harder multiplying fractions modules and then jumped to do a number theory module, which she initially struggled with, but then kept going until she got a 100. For the second hour we went over the fiction story that she was in the process of writing for class. The assignment was to write five chapters, and she had done two and a bit. I had her read what she had out loud, not stopping to fix very many mistakes except for the ones she caught on her own. Then we started reading over a second time and this time I pointed out every mistake and eventually she started catching those too. She will finish her essay for next time and we will edit it again.

Summer Tutoring review by Jamie in Smyrna, GA
We first did her multiplication and subtraction flash card fluency tests. She is improving with multiplication but her fluency was slower with subtraction, so I asked her to focus on practicing those for next session. We reviewed her spelling words and math vocabulary words. Spelling was pretty good, vocabulary was difficult, so I went over some study strategies with her. Her handwriting homework (for me) was pretty good, but I had her make some corrections. I had assigned her to write a draft of a story, so we edited it together and I asked her to elaborate on 3 of the paragraphs, and she has to do a revised version for next session.

Summer Tutoring review by Jessica in Smyrna, GA
Student A finished her math homework while Student B wrote out all of his spelling words for this week. Both twins have a math test tomorrow, so we spent the rest of the session working together to create a study guide on the chapter. Student B had a little bit of trouble with 6.3, so we did a lot of practice problems to help him prepare. Student A seemed to have no problems with the material.

Summer Tutoring review by Douglas in Smyrna, GA
We went over the student's spelling and we discovered a new way he takes information with his spelling. He's working on his spelling as well as his reading and they're both improving very well. For future occasions, I'm going to let him do most of the reading. We covered very little math but the math we did covered, he got everything correct.

Summer Tutoring review by Jackie in Smyrna, GA
The student worked on her homework first. She had already done her math, and it was completed accurately. We practice a few fact families with multiplication and division to review how the operations were related. Additionally, she now knows her 2s and 3s skip counting so I wrote out her 4s for her to practice. In reading, she did pretty well with topic and main idea. Details were a little hard for her to frame in a way that directly related to the main idea. She had no trouble with plural possessive nouns. We then finished our story on "Aquarius" from National Geographic, and she answered some text dependent questions. The concept that the cage with the least algae was the cage in which the fish had eaten the most algae was a little confusing, but using illustrations assisted her understanding a lot.
