Shipley Spanish 3 Tutoring FAQ
Over the course of a Spanish 3 class, students are challenged to speak, read, and write in Spanish at a more advanced level. Spanish 3 introduces new grammatical features like additional tenses, the subjunctive mood, and perfect verb forms. Students are expected not only to work with these features in the context of grammatical exercises, but also to apply them to their own personal use of the Spanish language to increase the sophistication of their verbal and written expression. In addition, Spanish 3 introduces complex facets of Spanish culture and asks students to analyze the ways in which these concepts relate to familiar aspects of students' lives.
While these may sound like imposing challenges on their own, Spanish 3 tests the student's cumulative knowledge of the Spanish language. This means that in order to understand the material, students must have a firm grasp on the concepts covered in previous Spanish courses. Are you struggling to digest the new material being introduced in your Spanish 3 course? Or could you benefit from review targeted to help you understand the foundational concepts that still confuse you? Perhaps personal Spanish 3 tutoring can help. This is where Varsity Tutors steps in. Recent Shipley Spanish 3 Tutoring Session Notes
The student has improved a lot with his reading comprehension and vocabulary and is feeling pretty confident in his abilities. He has also come a long way in understand what the different verb tenses are and when they are used, something he had a lot of trouble with in the past. We worked on understanding context clues for reading, his new vocabulary, and also reviewed all of the verb tenses.
Today we looked at the student's textbook from Spanish 2 last year and went over some of the major concepts: preterite, imperfect, and reflexive, along with basic vocabulary, and sentence constructions. I introduced the future tense because I believe that probably will be the next concept covered in Spanish 3.
This was my initial meeting with the student. We reviewed vocabulary from Ch1 of his text. Vocabulary centered on outdoor words, tent, sleeping bag, camping, etc. The student's pronunciation and accent is above average, and his retention of material from Spanish II is adequate. I assisted him in catching up on some assignments and we completed flash cards for the new vocabulary. He has a quiz on Monday and if he practices and memorizes the vocabulary he should do well. We finished the session with a practical exercise/application of verbs in the preterite tense.
The student struggles with conversational Spanish more than anything. My sessions with her primarily focus on oration and syntax comprehension. She is simultaneously using an instructional program, therefore her progression comes quickly. She is continuing to improve each session.
When the student and I met, I began the session by talking about his goals and motivation for wanting to develop the language. He told me that fluency in Spanish is his goal. I then proceeded by giving him some tips and tricks to help him achieve his goal faster. In addition, I also to use a few of the assignments from his old Spanish textbook to gauge where he is in his language development. We then proceeded to do the homework that his Spanish teacher assigned him together.
We worked on the student's homework for next week and I spent some time working with her to identify her strengths and weaknesses with Spanish. I learned that she struggles with verb conjugation and knowing what the verbs mean so I signed her up on a website that can help her practice more frequently. I helped her review the basic rules and all the irregulars for an upcoming quiz.
