For individuals who want to join the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) electrical apprenticeship programs, the aptitude test and interview is an important step. The IBEW aptitude test covers math and mechanical information, as well as reading. Starting an IBEW prep course from Varsity Tutors and getting some study time one-on-one with a tutor, who knows the material that the aptitude test and interview will include, can help you to feel more confident when you take the exam. An IBEW prep class will be heavy on mathematical concepts because the work electrical engineers do is very math-oriented. It will also contain reading questions as well, which are meant to assess your comprehension levels.
If you begin IBEW prep classes, you'll have a leg up on others who have chosen to study for the exam and interview on their own. A tutor can help you to evaluate the topics you need the most help with, design a specific program to help you better understand complicated topics, and also teach time management skills, because there is a limit on the amount of time for each section. The tables below explain what you can expect to see, in terms of the number of questions per section and the amount of time you'll have to complete each of them. It also outlines the scoring range and what you'll need to obtain to qualify to interview with a representative of the IBEW's electrician apprenticeship programs.
Sections of the Test
Section | Questions | Time |
Math and Mechanical | 33 questions | 46 minutes |
Reading | 36 questions | 51 minutes |
Scoring
Range | Qualifying Score |
1 - 9 (9 being the highest possible score) | At least 4 to be considered for an interview |
IBEW courses can cover a wide range of mathematical and mechanical topics, because that's what the test covers. If you're not comfortable with your math skills, IBEW prep courses with a personal tutor can help you gain more confidence by reviewing the types of questions that you will see on the test. IBEW courses can provide review of challenging concepts, such as quadratic equations, systems of linear equations, relations and functions. One-on-one work with a tutor can go at whatever pace you're comfortable with, unlike IBEW prep courses designed for groups.
In your personalized study sessions, you can go take practice tests, go through problem-solving drills, and work on reading comprehension, if that's something you struggle with. The table below gives an idea of some of the topics you might see on your exam or speak about during your interview. Your IBEW prep course can prepare you for these topics and others:
IBEW Topics (Non-Comprehensive)
- Systems of linear equations in two variables
- Substitution
- Addition
- Graphing
- Polynomials
- Quadratic Equations
