My name is Makayla Barker. I have a BA in International studies and Political Science from Macalester College in St. Paul MN. At Macalester, I also minored in French and Economics, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2020. While in college I also had the privilege of participating in a study abroad program through the University of Minnesota in Dakar, Senegal, where I spoke French and Wolof 24/7! All this to say, the material is still fresh on my mind! During school I worked as a tutor at the St. Paul public library system and School district, where I with middle school, high school, and college age students. Since then, I have been working in a couple of roles that require qualitative and quantitative research skills and hyper attention to organization and communication, so I am definitely equipped to help with those topics as well. As someone who not long ago a student myself, I understand the struggles that accompany not understanding material and having trouble reaching out to peers and teachers for the extra help students need. I enjoy working with youth, I've been described as personal, polite, and respectful, and thrive on working hard to help my students succeed. On a much more personal level, I love music, spending time outside, and hanging out with my two cats, Dini and Minnie - they might even make a guest appearance in our sessions! In April 2014, I finished my Masters in Psychology with a focus on Mental Health Counseling. I have many years of experience working with children and adults in the educational and behavioral fields. I am currently an asset integrity analyst at PinnacleART in Pasadena TX. I am a huge, huge math lover. I also thoroughly enjoy periodic tables, solving equations and reading essays. My experiences with schooling in Nigeria have taught me just how important a teacher's attitude is on the student's success, that is just half of the goal. I am a St. Louis, MO native, have studied abroad and lived in San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala for four years and have an advanced reading, writing, and speaking proficiency in the Spanish language. I am also a cultural anthropologist who has experience working with people from different cultural backgrounds and I have a life-long love for learning and sharing my passion for Spanish and Latin American Culture.I have experience with both High School Advanced Placement and college-level Honors College courses. I am patient and organized, have excellent writing skills, and am able to explain concepts in various ways. I would be happy to help students improve their writing, studying, Spanish, and any other skills they need in a method that is both fun and individualized for each student.I prefer to keep the tutoring sessions as individualized as possible, including varying the activities and materials used in sessions and assigning homework and suggesting topics to study as needed, so as to ensure the student receives the help they actually need and to not overwhelm the student with unnecessary extra work.
