Hello, my name is Kristen! I am a current doctoral candidate in the Spalding University Psychology program. I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology and Education from Centre College. My experience includes elementary, middle, high school, and college level tutoring. I love working with people and would love to help you achieve your goal!

I am passionate about languages, and know that learning a language is most effective when it is fun and engaging. I have spent almost a year traveling internationally and have tutored in both English and French along the way. I believe that the most critical aspect of teaching a foreign language is getting a student interested and excited to practice it, and I have developed many successful strategies to do this, through tutoring and through studying languages myself.I also have particular experience with ACT test prep—from taking classes as I prepared for the ACT to later helping others study for it. College entrance tests can be so important for determining a student's options in their continuing education, and I am committed to helping students achieve the highest scores they are capable of. I work with students to identify the subject areas they need to improve on and the testing strategies that work best for them individually. My liberal arts education exposed me to a great diversity of different learners, and helped me understand the many different learning styles that students have. I have consequently developed an adaptable teaching style to fit this variety of students’ needs. My personal favorite teaching experience was my time as a guide at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, where I took groups of scouts out on week-long horseback pack trips through the mountains. I would start with kids who often had no horse experience and throughout the week I taught them everything from riding skills and horse care to proper packing and wilderness camping procedures. Seeing those kids packing their packhorses in half the time and confidently racing their horses around barrels by the last day—the same kids who had been fumbling to lift their saddles on the first day—was the most amazing feeling. That’s when I realized I loved teaching.

I am a student and life-long learner who is currently between undergraduate and graduate school. In May 2015, I received a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Neuroscience and Biology from Centre College, and in September 2015, I will attend The Ohio State University to work towards a PhD in neuroscience. Throughout my academic journey, I have been guided by incredible teachers who have served as friends, mentors, and role models. I see teaching as a way to give back to my role models by passing down their knowledge to future generations of students. My well-rounded liberal arts education qualifies me to tutor a variety of subjects including algebra, biology, psychology, reading, and writing. As a neuroscience and biology double-major, I have an especially strong background in psychology and biology; however, I am also passionate about reading and writing as aptitude in these subjects forms the foundation of effective communication and comprehension of all other subjects. My teaching philosophy emphasizes individual learning and personal attention. I graduated from a small college where this philosophy is considered paramount, and by working as a teaching assistant there, I developed my skills as a teacher capable of providing a personalized education. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, reading poetry and fiction, hiking, and training for my first marathon.
I graduated from Centre College with a BS in physics, then from the University of Kentucky with my Master's degree in physics as well. I have tutored and taught across the whole range of physics and math. I have had more than my fair share of instructors who are brilliant in many ways, but not when it comes to teaching. I have been a teaching assistant in graduate school, an adjunct professor at 2-year and 4-year colleges (including my alma mater), taught in-person and remote, and tutored from introductory algebra-based physics through advanced topics. I understand that most folks who take physics do so because it's a required course to "get through" and not something they are necessarily passionate about; this makes it all the more fulfilling when my students make connections between physics and their daily lives, struggle and succeed at solving tough problems, and are ultimately able to look at how much they've developed their problem-solving skills along the way. I'm happiest when I hear those three magic words: "that makes sense." Years from now, even if you've forgotten the specific equations, I hope the analytical thinking and confidence you gained in studying physics helps you in whatever you pursue. I am a believer in a well-rounded education. I studied at a tiny liberal arts college, spent a semester abroad, and strive to constantly learn everything I can. Physics and math are just two lenses (or two sides of a single lens, depending on your perspective) through which we can try to understand the world around us. We owe it to each other to use our talents and efforts to make a better world for everyone. Teaching this challenging subject is one of the ways I try to achieve that lofty goal for myself. When I'm not teaching, you can find me playing sand volleyball, discussing politics with my friends, and trying (but usually failing) to spend less time gaming.
A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I matriculated at Centre College in Danville. There I studied history and played for the school soccer team. I left with many bruises and a degree in history. After a short diversion to serve my country in the Army, I moved to Louisville. I worked for the city and later the water company. I returned to school at the University of Louisville. I worked on a Master's degree in Teaching and certification in learning and behavior disorders.Once certified, I embarked on a career teaching. I have worked at three different high schools, teaching regular and resource classes, as well as coaching soccer. At the moment, I work as a special education teacher inside Our Lady of Peace hospital. There, I work daily to meet the educational needs of students with significant behavioral issues that temporarily prevent attendance at a regular school.I have worked as a tutor at various times throughout my teaching career. For several years, I worked evenings and Saturday mornings at a Sylvan Learning Center. Later, I tutored individual students through an organization called ClubZ!I tutor because it allows me to work one-on-one with a student. As a classroom teacher, I rarely get this opportunity. The opportunity for individual instruction gives me the chance to see real progress in the students I have the privilege to tutor.Outside of teaching, I enjoy coaching (and watching) soccer. I also like to ride my bike along the new trail through the Parklands of Floyds Fork.
I am a recent graduate of Centre College, where I earned my American Chemical Society-certified Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry. At Centre, I was an extremely active student and played Division III field hockey, was a member of Greek life in Kappa Delta sorority, and was president of Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science - an afterschool program. I also served within the chemistry department as a student representative and general and organic chemistry teach assistant and tutor. Currently, I am a graduate student at Tufts University, where I am pursuing a PhD in Chemistry. My past teaching experiences have helped me develop a love for mentorship and science communication! Some coursework I am comfortable tutoring: ACT, chemistry, high school math, and IB courses/Diploma.
Hi! I am a graduate student in the Philadelphia region. My undergraduate degrees are in French and Theatre, with a minor in Linguistics. I specialize in tutoring in French, English reading, writing and comprehension, and ACT reading and writing prep. (When I took the ACT I got a composite 30 score-- a 34 on reading, and a 33 on writing!) When I'm not in school or working as an actor, I am petting cats, reading books, and occasionally going outside. When contacting directly, text is always best! I look forward to meeting you!
Hi there! My name is Avery. I'm a history and drama major with a special passion for mathematics. I've worked in Hollywood as a screenplay analyst, and I can tell you firsthand how good writing and historical know-how are important in the ever-expanding creative economy of the 21st century. And of course math! You can never have too much math! I take pride in defying stereotypes and proving that creative people can also be good at math! I have a great sense of humor, experience working with k-12 and college students, and can't wait to help people learn and reach their full potential!
I'm a current junior at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. I'm passionate about the many wonders of the world on which the physical sciences pontificate. I am in the process of earning my Bachelor's of Science in Chemical Physics with a minor in French Language and Culture. I love to work with others and I'm excited to have the opportunity to learn with you!
I've been teaching in various forms over the past eight years, and nothing has been more meaningful and exciting for me than helping students grow as independent learners! As a principle, I don't just give students the answers - I ask questions to help guide them towards the solution using the concepts they know and the information they're given in each problem. After students develop a strong foundation, I've found that they have greater confidence in their own abilities and don't find problems nearly as intimidating. If a student becomes more confident in their abilities and no longer needs my help, I consider my job well done! I earned a dual Bachelor's Degree in Physics and Chemistry, with a minor in Mathematics, from a small liberal arts institution. (Or in other words, thousands of hours spent either in front of a chalk board or in a chemistry lab - and I loved every minute of it!) As a graduate physics TA at the University of Kentucky, I've spent seven semesters teaching physics laboratory courses to 60 undergraduates per semester. I create my own presentations, interactive activities, and worksheets to help my students learn the complex physics and error analysis concepts. In my second year, I was promoted to a Supervising TA position, in which I continued to teach while supervising and advising 5-6 other TAs teaching the same course. Beyond my university experience, I've worked as a math, science, test prep, and history tutor for over 1000 hours through various companies and independently. I excel in working with small groups or one-on-one, and I've received overwhelmingly positive reviews from my students for my attitude, patience, willingness to help, and careful attention to helping each student learn in their own way. I hold myself to a high standard and am constantly seeking to improve as an educator. I welcome all feedback and will tailor my sessions to meet your needs, whether that be preparing for exams, working through current homework, or reviewing concepts in general. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed as an independent learner!
