I began my career in education as a tutor. As a college student at Howard, I woke up early on Saturdays to work with my small group in math. While I can't say that I loved waking up early, I loved working with my kids! After that I was hooked. Helping students feel brilliant was something I had to do every day!So, after I graduated from Howard University with a Bachelors in Business Administration, I received my Masters from Georgia State University in Early Childhood Education. I taught 5th grade math, science and writing. I then transitioned into working with struggling students in small group and coaching teachers. I love giving my teachers strategies to help students feel smart.While coaching teachers is my role, I never stopped tutoring because there's nothing like hearing my kids shout "Ohhhhh!" after doing math they never thought they could handle. I think most kids struggle in math because they think they can't memorize all the steps. I work hard to help students find strategies that make sense to them. When my students see that there are so many ways to get to the answer, they become mathematicians.When I'm not teaching, I am building towers or playing train sets with my toddler! We have a blast. I love singing. I prefer to be curled up with a good book over shopping. I enjoy dinner with friends or my husband. Game nights are my favorite. Ever since I started my academic career, I have always had a passion for helping others succeed. As I have grown in my own fields, I have also gained a plethora of helpful ideas, tips, and strategies that have helped my clients succeed on their own. I am currently working toward obtaining my BS/MS in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I also tutored students individually for all sections of the SAT and ACT during my time there, and I have continued to do so for the past year with Varsity Tutors. I love teaching English and Literature because I have a passion for storytelling, and I enjoy teaching Math and Grammar because of their rational nature and the enjoyment that comes from solving logic puzzles. When I am not teaching, I enjoy going to the movies, spending time with my five younger brothers and sisters, and volunteering within MENSA. After graduation, I have remained close to academia by auditing classes in the areas of Anatomy and Physiology, Organ Systems, Histology, Embryology, and Neuroscience.My introduction to tutoring first occurred in my second year of high school. I tutored in all math courses, English (including college essay writing), all science courses, and test preparation. Furthermore, I also worked with elementary- and middle-school age children on social skills outside the classroom as well as all subjects inside the classroom. That passion and discovery of history in general as well as other related disciplines such as politics/government/religion and theology undergirds my training and love of teaching. I am a graduate of Morehouse College. I received my Bachelor of Arts in History and Religion. After obtaining three additional degrees my interests are in Early Modern England, Reformation History completing my masters thesis on Quaker Woman Preachers in England 1550-1589. I have traveled extensively as the Co-Chair for Advocacy and Public Voice for the Lutheran World Federation Council and serving in the Peace Corps in Cote d' Ivoire West Africa.My teaching style is interactive and engaging believing that the best teachers learn from students in iron sharpening iron.My favorite hobbies are cruise vacations, distant train rides and figuring out the subway system in various international cities.I am a baseball enthusiast, love reading biographies, attending love theater and bowling.
