I am a passionate educator who loves working with students who are struggling with mathematics, particularly at the middle school level.I was thirteen years old when I first discovered I wanted to be a teacher. I was not the best academically, but I was inspired by a teacher I had. He was funny, enthusiastic, caring, and engaging. I wanted to become a similar model for kids. In college, I spent much of my spare time tutoring middle school students in the area, and even college students in their math courses! I enjoy helping people understand things that seem foreign to them.

I have always a passion for curiosity. The buzzword "lifelong learner" has been around the education world for quite some time. But I want to have a lifelong curiosity. I always want to know things work and how to better understand things. I bring that same passion for curiosity to everything that I do, especially teaching and tutoring. Nothing brings me greater joy than being able to bring someone closer to their capability. My biggest teaching motto has been: "I don't teach based on what I know my students can already. I teach based on where I know they are capable of going and what they are capable of doing." I believe that people should always strive to know more. Curiosity makes the world a better and, frankly, a more fun place. If I can instill that lifelong curiosity into even one of my students, I would have reached success.I also firmly believe that conversation is a huge part of a successful teaching/learning process. No one knows how the students learn better than the students themselves. I constantly check in with how students are doing, often before I tell them how I think they are doing. This constantly dialogue allows us to form a better connection and does nothing but allow me to teach and the student learn better. I want to know their goals, interests, hobbies, learning styles, and anything and everything in between. This process is not a dictatorship but a partnership.I look forward to getting know my students and helping them on their educational journey!!!!

All students have the ability to succeed. This belief has fueled my desire to seek out and help students to reach their own successes through whatever means possible. Teaching is my vocation, and being able to assist you or your student in their journey to success is what fuels me to work as hard as possible to teach and find new ways to teach content. My main subject area is English/Writing/Reading. I received a Bachelor of Science in Broad Area English Education, and have worked in both middle school and high school teaching English Language Arts. In college, I worked as a tutor and the student manager of the Writing Center, as well as the Online Writing Center. All of these experiences have built me into the teacher I am today, and has provided me with the necessary experience that I need to be the best teacher that I can be for you and/or your student. In addition to English Language Arts, I am also experienced in tutoring in basic math skills (through algebra) and ACT prep.I am so excited to start working with you to help you reach your goals and find success!

I see the ultimate goal of education as seeking answers, encouraging independent thought and the pursuit of knowledge. I believe that rational thinking and growth are facilitated through the acknowledgement that there may be different ways to resolve an issue and that answers to many questions may be outside of our realm of rational thinking. My goal is to encourage such a perspective in the classroom as well as how one goes about their daily lives. I therefore see my role as an instructor as one where students can learn not only about the subject matter, but also constantly transfer the method of learning to how they move through life.I believe that active learning and being inquisitive are two of the most valuable motivators for learning and success. I have always strived to engage students in critical thinking and cultivated an interactive environment in which students can express themselves freely while learning to engage with each other in meaningful ways. At the graduate level, I emphasize the importance of research, not only for the data and possible exciting outcomes, but also for the value of keeping an open mind and asking about the process and validity of arriving at conclusions. My experience as an online student for 5 years, as well as being an adjunct faculty member has taught me that students need to be constantly engaged to fully benefit from the material they are striving to learn. The concept of the end-of-term finals has a valuable place in evaluating progress, but the continuous classroom or online engagement in trying to answer the question of so what? has a lasting effect on retention and understanding. The value of the brick-and mortar classroom experience can never be replaced or overemphasized. However, I understand the dynamism and continuing evolution of alternative ways of learning and teaching based on the need for greater flexibility to accommodate family and personal goals. This evolution is evident throughout the entire spectrum of the educational system from high school through doctoral programs. Consequently, I believe it is essential that all instructors familiarize themselves with the online method of sharing and communicating with students at all levels.I also believe that bringing an international and global perspective into the teaching environment is essential for students to grasp the dynamics of cultural differences, especially as they apply to public health, epidemiology, and health care in general. The concepts and products we in the United States take for granted are not necessarily available or applicable in many other countries. Several Universities have students from as many as 50 150 countries and unless a teacher keeps that in mind and applies a global perspective and thinking as part of how they interact with students, programs can fall short of attaining the objective of answering the fundamental question of So what?I will bring a combination of corporate experience, international experience, expertise with online teaching, an awareness of the importance of cultural and ethnic diversity, and a great enthusiasm for teaching.

As a writing instructor, I believe that my job is not to "tell students what to do," but rather to coach and develop, to ask questions and give feedback as needed. In my experience, students who are open to this feedback--and show an eagerness to grow--are the most rewarding to work with. I believe that written communication is one of the most valuable skills one can master, and that all students, regardless of their past experiences with writing instruction, can become effective communicators of their ideas. I relish the feeling of writing something meaningful and effective, and I hope to impart that same experience to the students I get to work with!

Elementary School Tutor • +23 Subjects

I hold my Elementary Teaching Degree from Bemidji State University, my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction K-12 from the University of St. Thomas, and a current Minnesota Teaching License. I retired almost 3 years ago after teaching for 34 wonderful years in the public school system, teaching 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade. There were so many things that I loved about teaching that my friends wondered why I was retiring. But, I have been blessed with three grandchildren on opposite ends of the country, and if I want to have fun with them, I need to be available. This led me to spend the next four years teaching English as a Second Language online to students aged 3-16, for which I hold TSOL and TFEL certificates. I found out that genuine, meaningful relationships can be formed virtually. And this love of teaching flexibly, online, brought me to Varsity Tutors. My first love of teaching is making students feel like they can learn anything, cheering them on, and making them love learning. Students want to know that you truly care about and believe in them, and I do! While I am available to teach many subjects, and I truly love them all, reading, writing, math, and English as a Second Language are my favorites. I am passionate about teaching students to not only read, but to LOVE reading! I excel at diagnosing current reading skills, and determining what they still need to learn in order to move them to the next level. I take into consideration their fluency, accuracy, comprehension, and reading strategies that they employ, and what ones they need to practice. If you can read, you can learn anything! I love teaching math, and making reluctant math students realize their inner math genius! I understand that not all learners learn the same way. I am very willing to teach them more than one way to solve a problem and help them become an expert at the way that works for them. I love teaching writing! I was fortunate to get to train under author Beth Olshansky in the art of pictures and image making. This is such a motivating way to teach students how to write, honing all of the skills necessary, including all of the traits of good writing, while the student creates a piece to be proud of. This makes the student want to write more! It is a writing strategy that works for young and older learners alike! I enjoy filling my days with traveling, baking, reading, and playing with my grandkids. In the summer I paddleboard almost daily, and in the winter I love to snowshoe. I hope to see you soon!

I am a recent college graduate from the University of Wisconsin River Falls with a B.S. ACS Biochemistry degree. While pursuing my degree I tutored a number of math and science courses. I have experience with one-on-one tutoring and also leading study groups of around five students. The courses I am most passionate about tutoring are general chemistry, organic chemistry, and math courses. I am quickly able to assess the strengths, weaknesses, and learning style of students in order to cater to their specific needs. Some students have a difficult time understanding topics from the perspective their instructor gives, but I am confident I can help those students learn the topics from a perspective they can understand. I am a very active person in my spare time. Some of my hobbies include snowboarding, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, going to the beach, and hiking.
