How can Reading tutoring help you?

Varsity Tutors can find you a reading tutor for your child in Warwick, RI, who could break down the basic concepts of reading to make sure they understand the big picture. Finding the main point of a text can be difficult, and understanding how elements of a reading like plot, genre, and setting come together to illustrate a main point can be difficult for young readers. If your child is lagging behind and needs to catch up, a tutor could be a fantastic resource to do just that!

A teacher may be stretched thin in the classroom, and cannot offer your student individualized attention. On top of that, amongst all the other students in the classroom, your child may not be able to focus as well. We'll find you a hand-picked reading tutor in Warwick who will love what they teach, which allows them to make your study sessions engaging. Reading can become a fun subject, rather than one that your family needs to get stressed about.

Reading Tutoring review by Alexandra in Warwick, RI
The student and I reviewed his homework for the evening. We reviewed the notecards he prepared for his science exam on Friday. He demonstrated a strong understanding of the material. We also read aloud for 30 minutes from his Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He was able to complete his work early, so we worked on reading and writing. I asked which subject was his favorite and he told me he really liked his social studies class. We decided to do a short reading on the first African-American elected to the Senate since he just completed a unit on Reconstruction. We practiced stating his sentences aloud to "test" how it sounds to improve his writing.

We covered the student's previous week's spelling test and completed a mock spelling test for her upcoming spelling test. She does well on her spelling tests and consistently scores 90-100. She was asked to review the spelling tests words and write sentences to practice her punctuation usage.

Reading Tutoring review by Adriana in Warwick, RI
We began the session by reading part of Dr. Seuss's "ABC." I then quizzed the student on his spelling words so far. He got all 10 incorrect the first time I quizzed him. We then went through the 10 words together, sounding out each of them and repeating the "silent e, long vowel" rule. I then quizzed him again, and he only got 1 wrong. We fixed that word ("phase") together and finished by reading further in Dr. Seuss's book.

Reading Tutoring review by Adam in Warwick, RI
Today, the student and I began by working on a worksheet on open and closed syllables. He combed through a list of syllables, hand-picking which were open and which were closed based on the vowel and consonant order and whether the vowels were long or short. Then, we worked on spelling with his target consonant blends for the week. After this, we read two full chapters of the book he is currently working on, then filled out his reading log. We were able to complete all his work and get a good chunk of reading done.

Reading Tutoring review by Kirstin in Warwick, RI
Today, the student and I focused on reading, math, and Spanish vocabulary. I had her identify letters and sounds for me as we read, practiced singing the alphabet and solving questions about which letter comes next after a particular string, and matched lowercase letters to their uppercase versions. In Spanish, we played a game to learn the Spanish words for head, arm, fingers, feet, hands, and hair. To build on her math skills, I had her create a bracelet by stringing specific numbers of certain colors of beads onto a string and counting them out and adding them together.

Reading Tutoring review by Jamie in Warwick, RI
The student and I worked on fluency by rereading poems to work on articulation and rhythm. We discussed the way poems are read. We worked on these skills by him listening to me read the poems multiple times and then having him read each stanza until he had no errors. I had him work on slowing down and enunciating each word.
