IntroParticipating with students to meet a challenge is an adventure and an exciting prospect for me. I loved acquiring language skills and proficiency, and I love communicating enthusiasm for aspects of ELA to learners who will achieve lifelong benefits. Forming a clear sentence or paragraph to express a fresh idea is one more window or view of the world and a contribution to it. Similar discoveries occur with a reading assignment. If it’s fiction, the student experiences characters’ struggles and understands how the author portrays these in social contexts and environments, using style, tone, plot, and the large vision of the theme. In nonfiction, the reader explores the thesis and topic to assess their truth or flaws. Analysis of every part of the work clarifies its essence. In poetry there is delight in imagery, diction, form and structure. In all genres, knowing about the period, background, and passions of an author gives entrance into new worlds for a reader.MethodsMany talents define an effective tutor. My teaching approach stimulates curiosity and imagination as well as problem solving strategies and awareness of relevant resources. I’m attuned to students’ personalities, concerns, and learning modes and relate subjects they study to their own experiences. Understanding can deepen with personal identification or ability to visualize, based on prior knowledge and past accomplishment. Good tutoring depends on rapport and mutual engagement as well, to bring concepts to life and unity to the learning situation. In dynamic sessions, students sharpen skills and become comfortable with syntax and grammar elements while they learn paragraph and essay structure. They develop a thesis with their ideas about it, using an outline; then, in most cases, they organize research materials. They apply critical analysis to texts and to their drafts. Specific references and details support insights; the result is vivid writing that reveals scholarship. For mastery of reading skills, I promote the enjoyment of vocabulary and word usage, as well as appreciation of the many ways authors involve a reader. The student and I draw on comprehension strategies such as morpheme and context analysis (for vocabulary enhancement), identification and purpose of key passages, and prediction of text direction or potential surprises. Many questions and discussions arise. The nuance and richness in a reading experience is the focus for these sessions.BackgroundMy qualifications for tutoring include a study of literature at Barnard College, where I earned a B.A.; I had transferred there from Oberlin College, which gave me two thrilling years as well. Later, I entered programs at UC Irvine (for TESL work), then several at UCLA, Florida State University, and Southern CT State University (for fiction writing). With my husband, I resided in Mexico for eleven years and began to tutor English there, then continued in this country, in California and Connecticut. Agencies and school districts referred me for state exam preparation, reading acceleration at the elementaryand secondary levels, and homebound instruction in general curricula. I tutored a large number of students privately as well. In California I was also a Spanish-English interpreter and a mentor for at-risk teens and youth on probation. For seven years, I was a writing tutor at Gateway Community College and Southern CT State University in New Haven. I received superior evaluations from students and supervisors. During my twenty years as a tutor, it’s been especially rewarding to interact with people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. In addition to assisting ELA students, I’ve taught ESL at different levels in many locations. I spent four years with nonnatives from various countries in a middle school pullout program. When they entered five mainstream classes, I stayed with the group, implementing teachers’ assignments and leading discussions, as well as guiding them in their research. They won academic honors and saw their writing featured in school magazines. It’s gratifying to make this second language accessible to learners striving for fluency and confidence.I have many interests outside of work. These include the arts, family life, children’s and teens’ advocacy, other cultures, and everything in nature.I look forward to working with Varsity and with its dedicated pool of students.

My mom, grandmother and all through our family tree-all TEACHERS! I refused to follow this path and went to nursing school....and within 2 years was teaching. I started precepting in the hospitals, then teaching clinical groups, then theory. I was born with the teaching bug, and even when I tried to avoid it...well it's in my genes! I actually started teaching when i was 15 years old. I grew up showing quarter horses and found a love for teaching kids and adults horsemanship skills. I quickly built a business and had over 30 families i worked with in the summer months when home from college. I had a wonderful time teaching and so when my previous teacher came to me and asked if i'd consider teaching nursing i thought, "why not?!". I've loved it and taught year round for over 10 years now. I love to learn as much as i love to teach, and they feed off one another. I have to stay on my toes to teach and so I'm constantly learning new things. When asked what my favorite thing to teach is...that's a hard question! I'd have to say I'm most passionate about kids and teens. I'm also very interested in psychological aspects of growing up. It's challenging! This being said I love working with people of all ages on Nursing and Psychology. I also enjoy teaching kids science. My background....I wasn't sure what I "wanted to do with my life" so I did my first Bachelors degree in "Social Sciences with a minor in Chemistry". The chemistry minor fell into place as i did a pre-medical track with that degree. After working as a Nursing Assistant for two years I decided my heart was in working in Nursing and not Medicine. That led way into my 2nd Bachelors-Nursing. I immediately started a Nurse Practitioner Program in Pediatrics following completion of my Nursing degree. I've worked lots of hours as a registered nurse in many settings as well as a nurse practitioner providing care to children.

Good education, I believe is one of the most important gifts you can give to a child.I started my interest in imparting knowledge to others in Middle School. In a program called Peer to Peer, I learned to mentor lower grade students in subjects that were challenging them. For me English, both reading and writing, were always my subjects of choice. Later on, in High School, I started tutoring not by design but in an informal way. I was always available to help edit essays, proof read papers or formulate theses.I am a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in International Relations and minoring in French and English. The studies of English and Literature have been my passion for a long time. I enjoy reading about cultures while familiarizing myself with the world’s diverse peoples. In my first year of University, I took three English courses and an intensive Writing Seminar which helped me develop my ability of analyzing, interpreting and explaining complex English texts while improving my written and oral communication skills. One of my greatest joys is helping a student who is first afraid or confused about a subject to understand it to the ability of being a master of that subject. During my freshman year, I was involved in tutoring children in West Philadelphia. The students assigned to us were often of lower academic ability and I loved the challenge the opportunity offered to me. To improve their motivation, I applied different teaching methods including games, quizzes and debates. Seeing my students improve their listening skills, their grammar and their research skills was very gratifying and that inspired me to help others to develop and to achieve their maximum potential. I am very creative and enjoy devising methods that make learning interesting. We are not born masters of our craft, we toil until we are masters of our craft. I am dedicated to encouraging young students to push themselves and embrace the growth process in order to develop and achieve. Through tailored tutoring to meet each student’s specific requirements, coupled with my ability to work well with others, I believe my students will excel.

I am a graduate of The University of Southern California where I received my Bachelor of Arts inPrint Journalism. I have worked with students from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels. I've tutored elementary school age children in their homes, helping them sharpen and retain the fundamental skills they have learned in class. I've tutored high school students struggling with math and English. Most notably, I've spent years working in class and on campus with community college students struggling with the college writing process. I can tutor a variety of subjects, but I am most drawn to English Composition and Literature. They are my passions, and, as a result, they are my favorite subjects to tutor. Being able to understand written word and being able to express yourself through written word are skills so essential to life that I really consider it a privilege to be able to help someone improve in those areas. My approach to tutoring is to help students see that concepts that might seem confusing or even at daunting at first, can really be broken down into smaller, easy-to-understand elements. And it's not a matter of being "smart" or not; it's a matter of being willing to dedicate the time and effort to truly understand something. Outside of work, one of my main interests is travelling. I've been to many different states and many different countries like Spain, Scotland, Nigeria and Belize, to name a few. I hope to continue adding more stamps to my passport. I also love seeing live music at local L.A. venues (my genre preferences vary from alternative or indie rock to hip-hop and neo-soul). I'm also a huge fan of detective novels of almost any sort, British television dramas and any movie based on a comic book.

I am an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago, working towards a pre-med double major in Psychology and Biology (with a specialization in Neuroscience). Beginning in my early teens, I began working and volunteering as a tutor in a variety of environments: I began as a volunteer at a summer program for underprivileged children at the Learning and Tutoring Center of East Austin, and since I have worked as a private elementary school tutor, a private SAT-prep tutor, and a preschool tutor for the Neighborhood Schools Program in South Side Chicago. I have taken, and succeeded in, a broad range of Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, and am familiar with the latest formats, question varieties, and scoring guidelines of these standardized tests, along with the SAT. My teaching philosophy is to go beyond "teaching to the test". Although test-taking skills are crucial for any assessment, I believe the most valuable thing a tutor can do is to enhance and help develop conceptual understanding in our clients. I believe that once a student understands something at the conceptual level, he or she will be much better prepared for the topic, not only in the specific test we are preparing for, but anywhere else it may come up. Memorizing words or equations might help somebody in the short term, but understanding why that word means what it means, or what an equation is actually depicting is worth the extra effort. Besides test-prep I think I can be a great help in writing and editing, as I have experience in everything from short, timed essays such as the SAT essay, to college essays, to research papers such as the IB Extended Essay. I am fully fluent in Spanish for anyone who wishes to communicate in or practice the language.Outside of school, I enjoy running and fitness, mystery books and television, creative writing, and participating in sports and philanthropy through school organizations.
