I taught her how to solve a system of equations using both substitution and elimination method. We also discussed how to solve a system using a table. She was able to understand both concepts after a couple of practice problems. We extended the methods to a system involving three equations. She was able to solve a system with three equations with little assistance from me.

We continued our preparation for the student's upcoming test today with more work on areas and parameters. We spent most of today's session on review. We are going over entirely new material for her, so a little difficulty is to be expected. Next session I want to continue our review just to make sure she fully understands the concepts.

Tutoring review by Martine in Bayville, NY
The student has a test tomorrow, so we reviewed identifying vertical and horizontal asymptotes, domain, range and then sketched the graph. I also did examples on Identifying the holes, X and Y-intercepts; simplified each expression and stated the excluded values and extraneous solutions. I went over the examples in her packet and those from a teacher's site to cover plenty of practices.

Tutoring review by Michael in Bayville, NY
We covered factoring higher degree polynomials, completing the square, and finding rational zeros for higher degree polynomials. She struggled the most with transitioning between problems that required substitution and completing the square. She was receptive to the material. I gave a guide on when to use each method to solve for the rational zeros of each problem and advised the type of problems they should practice. She received a C (72%) on her most recent test which is a major improvement and a big win. Overall, we going over the material and she's understanding it through example and learning. There was one problem we weren't able to solve though, and I believe it's because that one problem required additional information not necessarily covered so I am researching different ways to solve it that she has covered and having her bring the problem to her teacher.

Tutoring review by Carolyn in Bayville, NY
We reviewed conic sections for her upcoming algebra test. The student can do all the math, but has some trouble remembering the right order. We will work on that in future sessions. We then reviewed a bit for chemistry, focusing on what her notes mean in plain English.
