COMPASS Reading Tutoring FAQ
Academic advisors use the results of ACT Compass exams to place incoming students in classes that are appropriately challenging according to their personal mastery of a subject. If you're preparing to enter college at a school that relies on ACT Compass exams to inform class placement, it is important that you demonstrate all of the skills and abilities you have gained in high school in order to be placed in classes appropriate to your skill level. Classes too difficult for you can cause undue stress and difficulty, whereas classes that you don't find challenging may bore you and not help you to improve your abilities. Demonstrating your ability to comprehend written material is particularly crucial, as one's reading ability is tested in a wide variety of college courses. Doing well on this exam may allow you to skip classes that you do not need, whereas a poor performance on exam day might relegate you to a class that doesn't challenge you. If you experience test anxiety or have trouble interpreting passages in the context of a timed, multiple-choice exam, private ACT Compass Reading tutoring may be just the thing to help you present your school with an accurate picture of your reading abilities on test day.
Even if your reading abilities are top-notch, your ACT Compass results may not reflect your skills if the format of the exam gives you trouble, or if you don't work at a pace that allows you to finish the test while reading each passage and problem with accuracy. ACT Compass Reading tutoring can provide you with preparation custom-tailored to your particular needs, designed to be as useful and effective as possible. Your tutor can analyze your reading comprehension skills and pinpoint the areas in which improvement could most help you improve your score on the ACT Compass Reading exam. They can then design a study plan to help you improve these specific skills through focused review exercises. Working with a personal tutor helps remove much of the stress of having to diagnose the weak spots in your knowledge. Plus, since all ACT Compass Reading tutors have succeeded on this exam themselves, they can help you master the exact skills you'll need on test day.
The computer adaptive placement format used for the ACT Compass Reading test presents specific challenges. Practice tests are modeled after the real exam, but don't offer enough to prepare you for test day. Going it alone may leave some important topics uncovered, leading to gaps in knowledge. You may find yourself reading without difficulty and with a comfortable level of fluency. The format of the exam, however, can cause uncertainties in even the best readers, which is where your private ACT Compass Reading tutor can be of great help.
The one-on-one environment in which you will work with your tutor allows you to have your instructor's full attention, getting questions answered as they arise and receiving immediate feedback on your work. There may be assignments and homework, but these only serve to better your abilities to answer test questions quickly and accurately under pressure. Even better, you can schedule your tutoring to take place whenever and wherever it best suits your schedule, making it both efficient and convenient. Meet your tutor at home, a library, or request face-to-face online sessions using our live learning platform. Recent COMPASS Reading Tutoring Session Notes
Covered various arithmetic concepts, contrasting charts in science, level 10 reading passages, and who vs whom in English. Has a very good understanding of the concepts. Just needs more practice in the science portion.
For our first session, the student and I talked about the overall layout of the test and what she feels comfortable about and what she'd like to work on. The student is incredibly articulate and self-aware, which made this very easy for me. We went through the different kinds of verbal questions (scrambled paragraphs, logical reasoning, and some reading comprehension) and went over ways to solve these in a timely fashion. She gets most problems correct, but wants to work on her pacing. Since she's going on vacation for the next month, I gave her some chapters on math to review and a practice test to work on. I'm also going to create and email her practice sets for basic math skills.
- Meeting Tues, 7/30
- Reviewed first half of 10th practice test.
- Similar to last performance, most consistent issues are with vocab in critical reading.
Prior to our session, the student had taken a practice test from assessment test book. We went over his wrong answers in the English, Math and Reading sections, and I assigned him a reading about test taking strategies.
