I am very passionate about tutoring and look forward to meeting new students with a desire to learn!... To not focus as much on the grade, but rather to focus on learning and mastery of the content for the student.... After introductions I would immediately give practice problems. That way I can visualize what the student's thought process is, and correct errors wherever they may be.

My name is Spencer. I began tutoring while going to college at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and I really liked it. Besides tutoring I love basketball, hanging out with my dog, and playing board games with friends.... I believe learning should be fun! Learning in every subject can be fun and engaging, given the proper presentation. I believe that if you are having a good time while you learn, you learn more effectively. Also, learning as a student is a preparation for lifelong learning. Life is a lot more interesting when you try to always be learning something new.

I am a dynamic, encouraging, flexible, and clear tutor. I have tutored adults for three years and children for one. Experience teaches me that listening is a more effective teaching method than speaking. Also, I am a firm believer in the power of positive encouragement. ... The number one rule of teaching is that there are no rules. A good teacher is able to adapt his or her methods for each student. In order to do this, the teacher has to listen to the student and try to understand how the student thinks. From my experience, the two most common methods that work are: 1) encourage the student until he or she can figure out the material on his or her own. 2) walk the student through a sample problem step by step. Afterwards, guide the student to repeat the same steps on his or her own. After a few repetitions, challenge the student to solve a similar problem that requires a slightly different set of steps.
