This, I believe, is the most efficient way of teaching. My curiosity drives me towards a variety of subjects. I research, write, and teach Art History, History, and photography. I am also coming from a science background, where I dedicated my college years to physics and mathematics. These two...

My educational path has followed paths of privilege -- private prep school, the Ivies for undergraduate and graduate degrees -- but my outlook on education is not conservative. I see success in terms of curiosity that grows throughout a lifetime, and reaches into new domains. Confident, creative thinkers are always in short supply, so it feels good to collaborate with Varsity Tutors to encourage more of them.

Recent Art History Tutoring Session Notes
We started by going over step functions again, but then transitioned to working on his reading guide. Rather than just helping him study from the reading guide later on, I decided it would be good to answer the questions together to begin with.
She read her social studies section aloud. We took a little bit different approach, hoping she understands the material better and retains the information. She reads 1-2 paragraphs and pulls out the main idea and a supporting idea to write down in her notes.
The student and I worked through a chapter of his reading for social studies on the Constitution and the structure of the government. We read through the sections carefully, and I prompted him with questions throughout the chapter. He asked insightful questions and we tackled some tips for improving reading comprehension. We completed the summary and comprehension questions at the end of the chapter. He is still struggling a bit with picking out the most important information from the reading, but is definitely getting better!
The student and I worked on his upcoming social studies test. We worked to correct a previous quiz and used it as a springboard for this upcoming unit test. I left him with a detailed review sheet, as well as flash cards to continue his study.
We worked on her social studies homework, which involved reading a packet on the Roman Catholic Church and answering questions after. The student did well.
The student had a rather lengthy poetry analysis assignment tonight that she worked on. She had two poems and had to compare and contrast them. Language Arts are not her strong point and this was a stretch for her, but she did very well! We were able to talk about the point of view of the speaker, 1st vs 3rd person, metaphor, dialect, and other poetical devices. She's doing so well!
