My name is Joel Schafer and I an educator living in the beautiful Midwestern metropolis of Chicago, Illinois though I am originally from a small farming community in rural Missouri. I have studied English language and literature, linguistics, Russian language and literature, journalism, education, and pedagogy during my academic career. My passion is to teach Language Arts, though I also teach English as a Second Language. Providing education to others is what I devoted my entire life to, and I would not have it any other way.I first started tutoring when I was a junior in college. My professor recommended that I tutor some of the lower level students in her Russian language course and I accepted not knowing what I was getting into. Though I was volunteering, I was obsessed with helping others evolve academically. Eventually, after completing college, I moved to Moscow, Russia to teach English there for a year. Since moving back, I have been teaching ESL in Chicago to a plethora of students from all over the world. I am currently working on my Master's degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in English and plan to eventually teach in high schools here in Chicago.Part of what I love about teaching is learning form my students. They might not know it, but I learn as much from them as they do from me. It really is the best job that anyone could ever have.

I am a current undergraduate student at the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College, where I received a full tuition merit scholarship. I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry, as well as minoring in English. For years, I have tutored high school students in preparation for New York State Regents Exams, as well as elementary school and middle school students, mainly in English, Mathematics, and Biology. I enjoy exposing students to different learning techniques to allow them to discover their unique learning style. I find that this is especially important for younger students, who benefit from visuals, hands-on interaction, and interesting analogies. Thus, I customize my teaching methods to each individual student.I intend on becoming a physician, and have spent a large amount of time working in medical offices, volunteering in hospitals and clinics, and volunteering at health fairs. I have also done ophthalmology research which has allowed me to explore my love for the sciences. In my free time, I enjoy swimming, dancing, reading, and spending time with my family.I look forward to being a proponent of education for you or someone you care about.

Anatomy Tutor • +26 Subjects
I am an expecting graduate of Ohio University in May 2017. I will receive my Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology with minors in biology and nutrition, as well as a certificate in diabetes. After graduation I plan to attend Physician Assistant School to eventually practice medicine in the field of emergency medicine or pediatrics. Throughout my academic career I have tutored a broad range of subjects including nutrition, organic chemistry, human anatomy and physiology. I am most passionate about human anatomy as I have been a teaching assistant at my university for three semesters, and will continue to do so for another two semesters. I often engage students that are stuck or unmotivated by including fun learning tools such as Jeopardy, animations, and memorable mnemonics. In my experience, remarkable improvement has been observed when students first understand fundamental concepts and then build their understanding to tie together what they are learning with the importance it has in today's society and their future careers. My goal is to perpetuate the importance of education to broaden the horizons of my students in hopes for a brighter future. Outside of academics I enjoy hiking, kayaking, playing the ukulele, and watching engaging shows on Netflix.

I received my Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston in 2017. Since then I have been working as a Manufacturing Engineer in the materials science industry. I have been tutoring for the past 9 years. I tutor math and science at any grade level. My favorite subject to tutor is math because I love helping my students solve problems that they previously thought they couldn't solve. I believe that anyone can succeed if they put in enough time and effort. We all learn differently and I love adapting my tutoring strategies to meet each student's individual needs and strengths.

I recently completed my Master's program at Columbia for the the teaching of Social Studies, so I have spent a year teaching in a classroom setting. Prior to that, I have tutored on a more informal level in different subjects. My most rewarding experience came when I volunteered in high school to work one-on-one with an autistic elementary school child who I taught how to play chess. He showed a real interest for the game, but no one in his family knew how to play. I went there once a week to play games with him and give instruction.I am dedicated to becoming an educator and tutoring offers a unique opportunity to reach students on a more personal level than they can typically be reached in large classroom settings. While I have nothing against the classroom, I look forward to every chance I have to make direct connections with students and to help them achieve their academic goals. I am a genuinely curious person, and I find every individual's story fascinating and worthy of my time. Tutoring affords me the opportunity to give them this time.In terms of what I like to tutor, I have always loved taking standardized tests, as I viewed them as fun exercises in spotting tricks. I excelled at the SAT, and I would love to impart my understanding of the exam onto students who approach it with trepidation. I can help with all three sections, and I know the dynamics of the test (what are the categories of questions, what are the typical multiple choice pitfalls, how people should pace themselves, etc.)With regard to specific subjects, I initially began college as a Math major before switching to Political Science. I got all the way to Modern Algebra (group theory) before making the change, so I feel pretty comfortable with high school level Math. From years of experience in this field, I understand that Math is a participatory sport that people learn by lots of doing. I can help you or your child build the skills and experience needed to master this subject. Also, I love chess. Love it. I used to be nationally ranked, and I still play online in my free time. It is a great way to keep your mind active while having fun. I would be happy to play any student of mine if they are interested in this as well.

I am currently a graduate student at NYU pursuing my Master's degree in Psychology. Before moving to New York, I completed my undergraduate degree at Stevenson University in Baltimore. During this time, I worked as a peer tutor for three and a half years, covering subjects such as math, writing skills, and psychology. While at Stevenson I also helped to pilot a program that worked with at risk students to strengthen their study skills and motivation.

Having taught politics at the University of Glasgow in the UK, I know what the top universities expect of their students and I know what it takes to get there. That is why my tutoring approach not only focuses on helping my students learn essential material; it also focuses on helping my students learn how to learn for themselves so that they can become independent and critically-minded thinkers. I do this by creating a challenging yet entertaining learning environment. With a strong academic background in government, history, economics and literature, I understand the challenges my students face in each subject. Having also worked as a personal trainer, I learned what it takes to motivate my clients physically and mentally. Though academia is more tweed than tube socks, I still employ the same enthusiastic approach when tutoring to ensure that my students develop the necessary learning skills and motivation to succeed. Most importantly, I take tutoring personally, and thus I am personally invested in the success of all my students.

Frequently Asked Questions
Eighth grade represents a significant transition year where students encounter more complex subjects, independent learning expectations, and time management demands. Common challenges include struggling with multi-step math problems, organizing research papers, balancing homework across multiple subjects, and managing the increased volume of assignments. Additionally, many students face difficulty with executive function skills like planning long-term projects, breaking assignments into manageable steps, and staying organized across different classes.
In a classroom, teachers must pace instruction for 20-30 students with varying needs, which means struggling students often fall behind or advanced students don't get enough challenge. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows a tutor to identify exactly where a student is stuck—whether it's a foundational concept or a specific problem-solving strategy—and adjust their teaching in real-time. This targeted approach means students spend less time on concepts they've mastered and more time building confidence and understanding in areas where they struggle, leading to more efficient learning and faster progress.
Yes, that's a key goal of personalized tutoring. Rather than just giving students answers, tutors teach them how to approach problems, organize their thinking, and develop strategies they can use on their own. Over time, students build confidence and learn to break assignments into manageable steps, check their own work, and problem-solve when they get stuck. This gradual shift from guided help to independent work means students develop the skills and confidence they need to tackle homework successfully on their own.
Math and English/Language Arts tend to require the most support, as these subjects involve increasingly complex abstract thinking. In math, students tackle pre-algebra or algebra concepts that require strong foundational skills and problem-solving strategies. In English, they're expected to write longer essays, analyze more sophisticated texts, and develop research skills. Science and social studies can also be challenging as students balance hands-on projects with written work. However, every student is different—some struggle with organization across all subjects, while others need targeted help in just one or two areas.
A strong 8th grade homework tutor should have subject expertise in the areas your student needs support with, understand grade-level standards and expectations, and—importantly—know how to teach rather than just do the work for the student. Look for someone who asks questions to understand where your student is actually stuck, adjusts their teaching based on what they learn, and helps students develop independent problem-solving skills. Communication skills matter too—your tutor should be able to explain concepts in ways that click for your student and keep you updated on progress.
Most students start feeling more confident within 2-3 weeks of consistent tutoring, especially when a tutor helps them understand the "why" behind concepts rather than just memorizing procedures. Tangible grade improvements often appear within 4-6 weeks as students apply new strategies to their classwork. However, the timeline depends on factors like how consistently your student meets with a tutor, the specific subjects involved, and how the student applies what they learn to independent homework. Regular tutoring (1-2 sessions per week) tends to show faster, more sustained results than sporadic sessions.
Absolutely. Many 8th graders struggle with executive function skills—knowing how to break down a multi-week project, manage assignments across several classes, or estimate how long homework will take. A good tutor helps students develop these skills by teaching them to create checklists, prioritize tasks, use a planner effectively, and build study habits that work for their learning style. While content knowledge is important, helping students become organized and self-directed learners often has the biggest impact on both homework completion and overall school success.
