As a child, when people asked what I wanted to be, I told them unflinchingly, "a teacher." A lot has changed since then, but my appreciation for learning and a love of helping others is still here. I have tutored friends, siblings and classmates in various subjects, both as a formal, paid tutor and as a friendly volunteer.Toward the end of my sophomore year in high school, for instance, I led a study group among my fellow Regents chemistry students. It had been clear at this point in the semester that almost everyone lacked confidence in their ability to pass the class or the Regents exam. A couple of days in advance, I got some of my classmates to sign a sheet with their name and contact information, and texted everyone to discuss availability. Compared to the entire class, it was only a small handful of us who showed up at the school library; still, we made the most of the opportunity, and it felt great to take a position of leadership in order to encourage others. While attending New York University, I had experience helping fifth graders with writing and math as part of a work study tutoring program called America Reads and Counts. I fell in love with them the moment they greeted me with "Good morning, Ms. Robine" in unison. I saw firsthand the patience, flexibility, and multitasking skills it takes to run a fifth grade classroom, and realized, with humility, how much my help was needed. I have great respect for the teachers who can handle it all with grace.I believe a good a good teacher MUST have as much knowledge and interest about her subject as she does confidence in her student's ability to learn it. She cannot effectively teach what she herself does not know or care for. She should also be very patient and provide the necessary tools, rather than just the finished product. She must know when to step back and let students transition from theory to practice, from facts to personal experience. I strive to emulate these principles with all of my students.Other than tutoring, my interests are music, art, languages, writing poetry and narratives, and fitness. I taught myself to play the piano and guitar, and I also enjoy singing and songwriting. Most of my musical experience is closely linked to my Christian faith. I take much pleasure in going to the gym, jogging, taking long walks, attending open mics, and checking out the "Word Origin and History" sections of words on Dictionary.com.I look forward to joining my future students on the journey of success.

I am an English Language Arts Teacher and primarily work with students that need support with reading, writing, and executive functioning. It is rewarding when you have seen students with lower reading levels in the 9th grade, then go off to college at the end of their 12th grade year. I have a Master of Education in Moderate Disabilities and currently teach grades 7-12. I have supported students with preparing for many standardized tests, such as the MCAS, the ACCUPLACER, and the ACT/SAT English Portions of the exam.

At the ripe age of 19 I left school and employment to go serve as a missionary helping others. I was called to serve in Chile for two years, I did not return home for the entirety of the time I served. I love teaching and helping others understand concepts that they have struggled with. The feeling when a student "gets it" or the "lightbulb" moment is one that is very rewarding I feel it is one of my callings in life to help others overcome their difficulties. The purpose of teaching is not to pour information into the minds of students, but to invite and inspire the student to apply the knowledge to multiple situations and be inspired to seek further knowledge. I make a conscious effort to be friendly and connect with all those who seek my help.

I have a Masters of Science in Applied Physics and a Bachelors of Science in Physics from Northern Illinois University and The Ohio State University, respectively. I have been tutoring for 12 years in a range of mathematics and science courses from algebra to AP Calculus and physics to astronomy, respectively. I tutored math at a private tutoring center where I became very adept at helping students of varying ages, approximately 5 to 18.While earning my masters degree I taught introductory physics laboratories for two years. I have also been a math instructor at a second private learning center where I learned techniques in helping students not only academically but boost their confidence, enhance their strengths and recognize as well as work on their weaknesses. When tutoring, I teach students how ask the appropriate questions to help them solve their problems. I start by asking leading questions and get the student to reason through the problem rather than simply showing them or having them memorize procedures. This method gets them to be an active participate and not merely an "audience of one." I believe that each student is unique and I tailor my methods of teaching to fit their needs. Many problems can be explained in multiple ways, different ways benefiting different students. For example, some students work better visually and some through auditory means.I enjoy helping students learn because I like sharing the knowledge I spent considerable time acquiring with others and helping make it theirs, too. I particularly enjoy tutoring mathematics and science to educate and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. My favorite subjects to teach are physics and astronomy. Outside of academia, amateur astronomy, along with grilling and watching and reading science fiction are my hobbies.

Frequently Asked Questions
German literature presents several common obstacles for students. Understanding dense philosophical texts and complex sentence structures—German sentences often build meaning across multiple clauses—requires careful analysis. Many students struggle with historical and cultural context necessary to appreciate works by Goethe, Kafka, or Brecht. Additionally, reading in German while simultaneously analyzing literary themes demands significant vocabulary knowledge and grammatical understanding. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps students break down difficult passages, build relevant vocabulary, and develop strategies for engaging with challenging texts at their own pace.
The best German literature tutors combine native or near-native fluency with deep knowledge of German literary history, major movements (Romanticism, Expressionism, etc.), and key authors. They should be able to explain cultural and historical contexts that shape understanding of texts, guide close reading analysis, and help students develop critical thinking skills specific to literary study. Look for tutors who can bridge language instruction with literary analysis—someone who understands that studying German literature strengthens both your language skills and analytical abilities simultaneously.
Personalized instruction allows tutors to work with you on passages that confuse you most, explaining sentence structure, idiomatic expressions, and cultural references that impact meaning. Tutors can teach you active reading strategies specific to German literature—like identifying key themes, tracking character development, and recognizing literary devices. They can also provide historical and biographical context that illuminates why authors made specific choices. This targeted approach is far more effective than classroom instruction, where teachers must move at a pace that serves thirty students rather than focusing on your specific comprehension gaps.
You don't need to be a grammar expert, but understanding key grammatical structures helps tremendously when analyzing literature. German's cases, complex verb forms, and sentence construction directly affect how meaning is created and conveyed in texts. A good tutor helps you understand grammar not as abstract rules, but as tools authors use for stylistic effect. For example, understanding how word order shifts meaning helps you appreciate Kafka's unconventional syntax or recognize when an author deliberately breaks grammatical conventions for emphasis. Tutors can address grammar questions as they naturally arise during close reading, making the learning feel relevant and purposeful.
Absolutely. One major advantage of personalized 1-on-1 instruction is sustained conversation practice unavailable in typical classroom settings. Tutors can engage you in meaningful discussions about texts, ask probing analytical questions, and help you articulate literary interpretations in German. This develops both your conversational fluency and your ability to use academic language for literary analysis. Discussing themes, character motivations, and authorial intent gives you purposeful speaking practice with immediate feedback on your language use—something that strengthens both your German skills and your critical thinking simultaneously.
Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors experienced in various German literature curricula and standards, whether you're preparing for AP German Literature exams, International Baccalaureate coursework, or college-level seminars. Tutors can align their instruction with your specific course requirements and the texts your teacher assigns. They help you master required works, understand literary analysis frameworks your course emphasizes, and develop strong essay and discussion skills aligned with your curriculum's expectations. If you're studying particular authors or periods—whether Weimar-era modernism or contemporary German writers—your tutor can build expertise in those areas to support your coursework.
With consistent personalized instruction, students typically develop stronger reading comprehension skills, deeper appreciation for German literary traditions and authors, and more confident analytical writing about texts. Many students see improved grades on essays and exams as they learn to construct stronger literary arguments. Beyond academics, many find their overall German language skills—vocabulary, grammar understanding, and reading fluency—improve significantly through engaging with literature at a sophisticated level. Students often develop genuine enthusiasm for German authors and cultural traditions they previously found intimidating, making literature study feel rewarding rather than burdensome.
