Hello! My name is Tess and I am a recent graduate of Northwestern University, where I studied Theatre and Religious Studies. I am originally from Connecticut, and moved to New York last month to pursue a career in the arts. I am thrilled that I have the opportunity to work as a tutor in my free time.I have always loved learning and working with peers, which is why I decided to pursue a liberal arts education. I worked as a swim instructor for children ages 3-15 when I was in high school, and love being outdoors, exploring, traveling and dogs.I specialize in elementary school math, middle school math, as well as Calculus and Algebra. I am also eager to tutor English, writing and grammar. I graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelors of Science in Education in Exercise and Sports Science. For the last several years I have been working as a personal trainer, certified first through the American College of Sports Medicine and now through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. I am currently in my first year in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Georgia State University. At UGA I worked as a Lab Teaching Assistant for both Anatomy and Physiology and 2, and I picked up tutoring experience in chemistry, biology and exercise physiology. My favorite subject to tutor is anatomy and physiology because every time I teach someone else, I learn something new about the incredible human body that we live in every day. Some of my favorite hobbies include working out, reading, finding new parks and trails to explore with my dog and learning something new.

I have always been keenly interested in how our bodies metabolize energy, how the immune system works and how genetic information is processed and transmitted. I felt that I just had to understand the complexities of the biological functions carried out in our bodies every day. I worked very hard in school and my grade point average was in the top 1% of my graduating class. When I entered college, I decided to get two bachelor's degrees in order to give me thorough training. My first degree was in biology and my second was in medical technology. I worked as a medical technologist at Stamford Hospital for three years but then I wanted to do biomedical research. I soon began at Yale University and worked side by side with some of the top research scientists in the world. I continued there for fifteen years. I have many publications with them in some of the top scientific journals in the world. I have also been fascinated by world history and it has been a very strong interest of mine for many years. Additionally, during my time as a graduate student, I was required to teach the laboratory portions of college biology and advanced biochemistry. I was very pleased to learn at the end of the courses, that my students felt I was the best teaching assistant they had at all of their courses at UConn. So, with the knowledge I have accumulated over the years and the strong desire I have to help other people, I look forward to working diligently together with students to achieve their best possible success in the academic world.

My belief is that anyone can learn. We all learn in different ways.In life when we set clear goals and bring a ready mindset, our goals are ready to become a reality.My teaching style is based on honing in on the multiple intelligences.I implement a well structured learning hour.A lesson will consist of modeling for the student, student practice by motivating students and focusing on their strengths while gently helping them with their academic weaknesses.In the last five minutes of each session, I incorporate writing in a journal, so students can write down goals and ideas about their school day or even one new concept they have learned and mastered.Later on in time, students can read their journal and see how much they have accomplished!

I graduated from the University of Oregon with a BA in Mathematics and concurrently completed a BA in Spanish. Currently I'm working on completing a MS in Statistics at Portland State University. I enjoy playing guitar, reading, learning foreign languages and math. I've loved math for the way it offers never-ending opportunities of discovery and ways for people to push the boundaries of their abilities and knowledge. I believe that with a strong motivation to work hard, and some encouragement, that we're all capable of excelling at math despite however difficult it may be.Working as a ninth grade math teacher in a public school in Mozambique as a Peace Corps Volunteer I've had experience teaching and tutoring hundreds of students. Additionally, I have worked with kids as young as elementary school up to adults to understand algebra, arithmetic, geometry and calculus in English as well as in Spanish. I am also equipped to tutor beginning and intermediate Spanish learners.As a tutor, I consider the student's prior knowledge of subject matter as well as his/her strengths, and difficulties when approaching a manner of instruction. Moving at a slow rate, I provide explanations and examples of the concepts at hand and then allow the student opportunities to test his/her knowledge.
