My tutoring style is structured on the principle that not every person learns the same way. It's not always how you were taught the material, but how it was received. If it was never received and learned by the student, they were never taught.I teach Sciences (chemistry, biology), and Math and have ...

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Kentucky in 2007 and my Master's of Science in Chemistry from Georgia Tech in 2010. Following graduation, I worked as a chemistry professor for 3 1/2 years at Gordon State College teaching General College Chemistry I & II (chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and physical chemistry) and Organic Chemistry I & II. For the first two years that I was a chemistry instructor I was the youngest faculty member on campus and my classes would always be among the first to fill up. In my classroom, my colleagues would describe me as being the goofiest person in the room but it was something that I found necessary to connect with my students. Being a younger professor I remember what it was like to be a student and I remember the things that truly got my attention. I would teach my classes using superheroes, football references, mythbusters, and even relate some material to the school bus. In my office hours, I would be able to find out what interested the students and come up with an example that they would be able to understand. In the sciences, I believe learning should be as much hands on as possible and I used a variety of outside resources to teach various concepts, whether it would be using balloons, dry ice, tennis balls and paper wads, or even LIGHTING WATER ON FIRE. In addition to all of the chemistry subjects (up to a graduate level), I am qualified to teach physics, algebras 1-4, geometry, pre-calculus, and can do SAT and ACT math prep.Outside of the classroom I enjoy watching football and college basketball, going to broadway shows like the Book of Mormon, Wicked, and Monty Python's Spamalot, and going to comic book conventions. After experiencing DragonCon while living in the Atlanta area, there is nothing more fun than watching people dress up in Halloween costumes when it's not Halloween. Finally, I am an avid bowler and love to cook as these are my releases when I am over stressed.

I graduated from the University of Virginia in 2012 with a B.A. in English Literature, but my education included coursework that covered both the humanities and the sciences. I even spent a year working in a biomedical research lab at the University of Virginia School of Medicine to supplement my coursework in the sciences. Outside of class, I cultivated my passion for mentoring others by serving as a Resident Advisor and an after-school tutor for a local Charlottesville middle school. My past tutoring positions have also allowed me to work with a wide variety of ages and even given me the opportunity to work in various countries across Central and South America.Regardless of where I was working, the age of my students, or the subject matter, I have always enjoyed going through the learning process in a fun and creative manner. One of the ways I have accomplished this is by complementing my expertise with an abundant amount of support and encouragement. As your tutor, I will strive to adapt my style of teaching to best fit your unique ways of learning, giving you the best learning environment to succeed in!

I completed my Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Virginia where I majored in Chemistry and Spanish. I subsequently attended the University of California, Berkeley where I earned a Master of Science in Chemistry. I have instructed and tutored students in a variety of subjects, including biological sciences, chemical sciences, and Spanish. I have served as a teaching assistant for a variety of undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses, including biochemistry, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. Through these experiences, I have taught, assessed, and tutored students of all levels and am very familiar with the common and not-so-common challenges they face. More importantly, I have strategies for helping students past their obstacles. There are often useful tips and tricks to help students manage difficult material with greater ease. Above all, I value creating a comfortable environment where even a timid student can feel comfortable taking chances and making mistakes with the material, free of embarrassment, in the name of improving. As I've said to my students, it makes no sense to struggle silently with a hard subject. If you have a question or need some help, all you need to do is ask.

As some say, teachers are not and should not be the individuals who end up being in this profession because of being unable to find "other" jobs. I think this approach has some indirect messages to all teachers and puts a huge responsibility on our shoulders to prove that students we are responsible for, deserve intellectual people who deliver a high quality instruction that addresses their unique needs. For me, teaching resembles to what doctors do with their patients. Just like a successful treatment, an effective instruction always begins with the right diagnosis. You will never see a doctor applying exact same treatment for all patients ignoring their backgrounds. Thus, an outstanding teacher must be a person who is an expert in identifying the student and his/her needs. Once the needs are determined, teacher must master the student centered instruction. Furthermore, it is imperative to be able to accurately assess the student with the right tools and techniques and be able to utilize the resources made available. Besides all these technical skills, an outstanding teacher must always be a caring person who always prioritizes student learning regardless of challenges facing him/her.

I am passionate about teaching because I understand greatly a lot of the academic struggles and problems students may face through education, especially as a first generation college student. Currently I am studying for my medical doctorate degree (M.D.) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. I graduated UCLA with a Biology degree with Asian Languages minor in 2019, cum laude honors. Both during my undergrad and days since, I had a chance to tutor private clients in Southern California and work for a few exam prep companies. I enjoy tutoring math, sciences (chemistry, biology mainly), social sciences (history, politics), essay writing, and Japanese. I also help assist in studying for standardized exams (SAT, ACT, SAT Subject, AP, MCAT, PCAT, OAT)! My tutoring style will be very direct in trying to identify gaps in knowledge and working/practicing on those gaps. I like to be interactive and answer the students' questions directly. I strongly believe education is one path in which students may be able to reach their dreams and I will be your supporter along the way. In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano, practicing martial arts, and watching anime/playing games.

In May 2020, I earned a bachelor of science in chemistry with honors along with a dual minor in animal ecology and anthropology at Iowa State University. With a strong work ethic and extreme dedication, I was accepted into the PhD program in chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle where I will begin this journey this fall. I have been an active varsity tutor for two months; however, I have two years of hands on teaching experience where I was a general chemistry teaching assistant at ISU. My overall passion for teaching was highlighted this past semester where I was rewarded an excellence in teaching from the chemistry department along with receiving an ACS award in inorganic chemistry for my undergraduate research. I primarily focused on general chemistry on varsity tutors; however, I also tutor subjects related to physical chemistry such as quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and kinetics. I throughly enjoy tutoring physical chemistry because I love the math involved with this field along with the practical applications physical chemistry can offer such as molecular spectroscopy. My teaching philosophy is to assess the current understanding of the student and build on the current knowledge they have learned. I am very patience with my students. I make sure to break down the material taught in the class and remold it into helpful "chunks" of information that is hopefully easier for the student to digest. I am extremely adaptable as well where I offer different strategies such as visual/tactical approaches based on the needs of the student. Outside of academia, I watch Tv shows, play video games, and enjoy taking walks in nature. I have a genuine passion to teach chemistry and if you have any further questions feel free to contact me!

I will also be starting Dental School at NOVA Southeastern School of Dental Medicine in the Fall. On my DAT, I scored a 23 AA, 25 TS, 22 PA, along with a perfect score in General Chemistry.I have been an in-person tutor for 4 years for students in many STEM courses, with a concentration in Organic Chemistry and Biology. This has shown me how to help students understand difficult and new concepts! It took me a very long time to figure out the best ways to study, so I enjoy passing on that knowledge. I have a welcoming and outgoing personality, so even if my students aren't sure what questions to ask, I am a great help at working through that process with my students!
