As an undergraduate, I was privileged to attend Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Knox's small class size and emphasis on senior faculty teaching introductory courses made a lasting impression on me. I learned to learn in a collegial atmosphere. As a graduate student (MS & PhD) at Ohio State University, I successfully taught for my entire graduate career. I was nominated several times for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Working with and being a student at a large state school helped round out for me the variety of educational experiences available to students. From both large and small schools, I have adapted those traits of those teachers who most positively influenced me. In my teaching over 20+ years, the following points of emphasis come to mind.1. All students are individuals. They deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. This is a shared responsibility.2. Love of the subject and knowledge of the subject I am teaching go a long way to imparting the true excitement of learning. I have mastered many fields and work to intersperse "real-world" examples into my teaching.3. A Russian author said, "You can teach anything to anyone if you truly understand it yourself." I believe that. I work hard to truly understand the subject and choose not to try to teach a subject in which I am not fluent.4. In my teaching approach, I try use the Socratic Method to show the student that he already knows the answer to his question. I do this by directed questioning, leading the student from beginning to middle to end in a logical progression. The result is a student who learns to have confidence in himself and in applying the information he has already mastered.5. I receive back from teaching students more than I put in. I am constantly overwhelmed and gratified by the feeling I get from seeing the expression on a student's face when he finally grasps a difficult concept.

I graduated from Brigham Young University-Idaho with a Bachelor's in Health Science with an emphasis on public health. I started tutoring in high school, but I didn't catch the teaching bug until about 3 years ago when I started teaching music to children.I believe in extra-curriculars and the arts. Whether it's sports, music, art, or theater, I believe those things are what make life worth living. For me, I play the French Horn and snowboard. My motto is ???Sometimes you need to go the extra mile. Do the extra credit. Be more than your peers expect you to be. Set the bar high and don???t be afraid to fail. Failure leads to success.???Let me be the one who helps you achieve your academic goals. I have been on both sides of the road. On one side is instant success. The other is where I see my classmates get ahead where I have fallen behind. I have had to struggle and work my way up. I know what it???s like to do the homework and read the chapters but still fail the test.I love inspiring people. It takes a lot of effort, but what makes it all worth it is seeing the light in their eyes when something starts to click.Pick me, and I will reignite your passion for learning.

I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2011 majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Chemistry. I worked for several years as a product engineer in industry and now am applying to go to medical school. While a college student, I was a campus tour guide, undergraduate researcher, violinist in orchestra, and I tutored both high school and college students for the Pitt Engineering Career Access Program. The tutoring program was designed to support students focused on graduating with a degree in science, technology, engineering, or math. My favorite subjects to tutor are anything in the math and science fields. I firmly believe that with the right approach and a bit of practice, anyone can grasp these topics. I treat solving math problems more like solving a puzzle, one piece at a time. Since I am passionate about the importance of math and science, I enjoy making them more relatable to a student by explaining their real world applications whenever possible. One of my favorite activities is distance running. I am a volunteer coach for the Girls on the Run Philadelphia organization and I ran the 2013 Chicago Marathon.Overall, I am an enthusiastic person and am excited about any opportunity to have a positive impact. I try to combine my technical background and creative personality to make learning a difficult topic easier for a student. I enjoy tutoring and find a great sense of gratification in helping students achieve their academic endeavors.

I'm graduating from medical school at Duke University this summer and finally have quite a bit of flexible time to tutor, something I really enjoyed doing all throughout college. Before med school, I went to Rice University for undergrad and majored in Biochemistry and minored in Business and Global Health Technologies. In many of the subjects I tutor, I've learned them not just once or twice, but three times (for example - General Biology, AP Biology, college-level Biology, and the ultimate med-school/real life application of Biology). Because I have been through the same learning difficulties, I know how to explain the topics in a way that is easily understood. As for my tutoring style, I like to get to know the student's goals, difficulties, and schedule, and tutor the student accordingly. In the tutoring sessions, if you don't have any specific questions or homework to do, I'll do a brief review of the topic, and then ask you to work a few example problems. This helps keep you both active and alert, and ensures that you're understanding the material. My past clients have included middle school students to college students. I've tutored a variety of subjects including the PSAT, SAT, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, English, and Geometry. In the far past, I have also tutored elementary school students and worked as a full time Teaching Assistant in an ESL program.I look forward to hearing from you!

I began tutoring college algebra and trigonometry during my sophomore year at Kansas State University because one of my math professors at the time offered that opportunity to several students in her Accelerated Calculus class. I found that I really enjoyed sharing what I had learned, helping a student see something from a different perspective or finally grasp a concept that they had struggled with. After I graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering, I began a career in the US Air Force, first working for the Air Force Research Lab, and then working for the National Air and Space Intelligence Center as a scientific and technical intelligence analyst. I have continued to seek opportunities to teach, and to share what I know, with junior employees, with my nieces and nephews and with my own children.I enjoy teaching language, science, and preparing students for standardized testing, but I think I'm most passionate about teaching math because I believe learning math is helpful in developing brain function, in the same way that going to the gym is helpful to developing physical fitness. Although it requires effort, the process of learning math should involve the beneficial pain that leads to good results rather than the crippling pain that prevents any further progress that too many math students unfortunately experience.Beyond my work as an analyst and a tutor, I enjoy reading and spending time with my kids. Since I have eleven (soon to be twelve) children ages 28 down to 2, there are a lot of opportunities!

I am a graduate from the University of Pittsburgh, having received my Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences. My coursework was focused mainly in chemistry, which I earned a minor in, and was supplemented with a certificate in German Language. My primary focus is teaching Organic Chemistry. I have been a teaching assistant in both laboratory and lecture-based Organic Chemistry courses, assisted in organic synthesis research, and am very passionate about making this notoriously difficult subject easier to understand for new students. My teaching philosophy is to build a strong foundation of fundamental chemistry principles, and combine those principles to reach practical solutions to complex problems.

I am a graduate student at Sam Houston State University pursuing MS in chemistry and going to graduate in May 2016. I am looking forward to join graduate program at UT Austin to obtain PhD in chemistry. I am currently working as a Teaching Assistant and Tutor at SHSU for various chemistry courses. I have always been passionate about chemistry and mathematics because of their direct relation with our everyday life, a need to think deeply for problem solving, and the presence of wide scope to always learn something new. I have been tutoring these courses to the school and college level students for about five years in one-onone and small group settings. I enjoy tutoring GRE quantitative as well. My tutoring strategy is to show a path to the students so that they can think through the problems and solve them by building confidence in themselves. I believe that the role of tutor is to guide, to motivate, to develop curiosity and to help students to understand concepts with a goal of watching them succeed. 'In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn' has been my all-time favorite quote.
