In May of 2015, I graduated from the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota. There, I earned my degree in Biochemistry while working as a coffee shop barista, environmental chemistry laboratory assistant, and emergency department medical scribe. Further, as an undergraduate, I developed a love for teaching as I worked as a Teacher's Assistant in various biology and chemistry laboratory courses and later had the opportunity to serve as a private tutor in Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. I enjoyed the opportunity to work with students in the subject areas I love. With academic understanding comes excitement, further curiosity, and a sense of achievement. Leading my students toward this understanding is my goal, and something I take great pride in. In August of 2015, I began my medical school education at Creighton University. I am excited to continue working as a tutor while earning a degree that will allow me to be a life-long teacher.

Hello students and families, my name is Tarek. I attended Temple University where I majored in biology and graduated #1 in my class with distinction in my major. I am a big fan of science simply because science is discovery and I have a deep love for novelty and adventure. I've been working with students all my life, first as a peer mentor and later on as a formal tutor/mentor. I have had great success with my students over the years and continue to keep close relations with many of my former students. Learning is a lifelong task so I seek to keep my tutoring relationships long term. Currently I am taking time off from school in order to pursue other life goals outside of the classroom. However, with that being said, I am currently in the process of applying to Medical School so that I may begin working towards my Doctorate in Medicine in the Fall of 2014.When working with students, I try to approach problems from various angles as often science has parallels in other fields. In addition, we all occupy the same world and therefore have some degree of intuition as to how things should work. I like to draw on that intuition to help students conceptualize various topics.I live to work and therefore give 110% in everything I do. I believe that we can truly get to know ourselves only by pushing ourselves beyond our limits. I make myself available 24/7 to my students and to their families. If you have any questions, feel free to email me or call or stop me in the street if you recognize me. I look forward to meeting my future students and their families and doing strong work towards whatever goals students may have. Thanks.

Raised in Salt Lake City, Utah and educated at Reed College and the University of Utah, I received my B.A. in Philosophy from the latter with minors in History and English Literature. For the last several years I have been honing my German language skills and plan to pursue an advanced degree in Europe some time in the near future. My tutoring experience ranges from ESL to standardized tests. I've worked as an assistant debate coach and paper grader, too. I believe strongly in the virtues of the examined life; I enjoy aiding students with topics--there are a great number of them--that promote critical reflection upon, and quite often adjustment to, our understanding of the world and our place in it.

I grew up in a family of educators and have always been passionate about the pursuit of learning. I graduated from Northwestern University where I received a BA in Theater and a Mucial Theater Certificate. Growing up, I assisted with many of my mother's students and tutored many people from my school, specializing in math tutoring. Along with math, I also tutor writing, particularly essay writing and poetry. In college, I studied poetry abroad in Paris and have written poetry recreationally since high school. Finally, I attended a Spanish immersion elementary school and have continued to take classes in Spanish throughout my education and thusly am a good candidate to tutor Spanish. My teaching philosophy can be summarized with control. I like for the student to have holistic control over the material themselves rather than feel any inferior knowledge to me as the tutor or to their teachers. The most immediate way that I have found to access that control is for the student to conclude their own answer without fear of right or wrong. I believe that if the student discovers a pathway to the answer, even if the answer is initially wrong (in which case, of course, we would go through the problem together and search for where the student might have gone wrong), that s/he can walk into the class or test knowing that s/he is capable of finding answers. In my experience, the most frightening subject is that which one feels they have no knowledge past the question. As a musical theater actor, I am obviously interested in singing and dancing as well. In high school, along with theater, I also swam and ran track; and as a child I was a competitive gymnast and still do some tumbling. Furthermore, while living in Chicago, I ventured into the comedy scene, and have a new found interest in improvisational and sketch comedy. I am looking forward to meeting with students who are passionate about learning and looking forward to a ascertaining a personal role in their educations.

I wasn't used to listening. In high school, my flair for the dramatic led me to the stage: I was comfortable there in front of audiences, filling auditoriums with my voice. And so, when I arrived at Brown University, I thought teaching would be a natural extension of my inner (and, to the occasional dismay of friends, outer) thespian. When I stood in front of my first classroom, teaching English during a sweltering Providence summer to ten eight year-olds, I realized that not even my loudest volume could bring order. And so, I began to learn what my teachers throughout schooling had implicitly taught me: listening to and building relationships with students is perhaps the most essential tool in a teacher's arsenal.Throughout my time at Brown, I lent my ear to various different teaching opportunities, learning to know when to lead, and when to step back and be led. As a tutor with Brown Refugee Youth Tutoring and Enrichment, I met with Yonas, a fourteen year-old from Guinea, to help him with scholarship applications. He was confounded by the prompt: "describe yourself." Together, we worked to clarify what that meant to craft a narrative that would help him succeed. He got that scholarship, and the essay he wrote, though informed by conversations with me, was all his: it was his story, his words, and his voice. Later, I taught German to sleepy undergrads. In the classroom with twelve students, I balanced teaching a lesson at the front of the classroom with walking through the desks, observing, questioning, and facilitating conversation. In my weekly office hours, I sat one-on-one with students, encouraging them to come with questions or just a thirst for conversation: in the lobby of the school library (my "office"), I sat for hours with my students, discussing everything from the subjunctive to our favorite kinds of wurst. My approach to tutoring is much the same: my sessions are personally tailored to each individual tutee's needs and interests. I am a firm believer that learning is not static it must be informed by a mutual exchange between tutor and tutee: learning not just the "why" of a question, but also the "how."
