I am a graduate of the University of Michigan where I earned my bachelor of science degree in cellular and molecular biology. I chose this major because I am fascinated with how cells in the body interact with each other and the pathways in which they communicate. Originally being pre-med, I applied to medical schools the year after I graduated. Also during this gap year, I taught introductory chemistry lab for science majors at Grand Valley State University. After some self reflection I decided medical school was not the path I wanted to take and decided instead to move to New York City to pursue my other passion of performing on stage. However, due to my background in academia and teaching, I desired to maintain plugged into that world in whatever way I could. That is how I discovered VarsityTutors.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Since I first tutored about six years ago, it has always been a passion of mine. I enjoy making connections with students and helping them succeed. I believe that any student has the capacity for greatness; sometimes they simply require the right push. As a tutor it is my mission to help every student reach his or her potential. I accomplish that by adapting my tutoring technique to the specific style of the student.

I am working as a Research Assistant at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the Department of Transplant Surgery. Though I enjoy working in research, I truly love educating others in anyway that I can. My most recent tutoring experience was during the summer of 2014, in which I taught algebra to a middle school student. In high school, I tutored many of my peers in Spanish, mathematics, chemistry, psychology, and biology. I personally love tutoring both math and biology because the material is interesting and also fun to learn! As a tutor, I always try to relate the material at hand to specific interests of my student. I find that a student understands topics better when we find a way to equate his or her own hobby to the material. With that, I really seek out what the student enjoys doing and use their hobbies as positive reinforcements for learning. Personally, my interests include music (vocal and instrumental), sports, Harry Potter, superheroes, and juggling.

I am a fourth year Medical Student in the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at CCNY. This is a seven year BS/MD program, so by the end of the seven years, I will have achieved both degrees. I have a lot of tutoring experience in the K-12 age especially in the 7-12 grade range. I have taught SAT, SHSAT, ACT, SAT subject tests and Regents exams as well. My favorite subject to tutor is math and biology, but I am able to tutor other subject areas like reading, writing, chemistry, and physics. My tutoring style is very student oriented with some lecturing. I make sure that most of the time I am asking questions, even if it is basic, just to get the student to always be on his/her feet. I also make sure to use a lot of diagrams and flow charts when teaching. Outside of school, I spend a lot of time exploring and doing photography. Having been a science nerd throughout high school, I knew that I would want to study biochemistry at university, but I also wanted to strengthen my writing, analytical, and research abilities in a non-scientific context. So focusing on both was perfect for me because I was able to develop analytical and problem-solving skills in two very different contexts. Having this background also allows me to feel comfortable tutoring a range of subjects.

I'm sure of, it's that I genuinely enjoy tutoring. I'm also a "professional" student. I say this because absorbing, analyzing, and integrating knowledge from my medical courses are necessary skills for my own academic success. I am currently a graduate student at Columbia University pursuing my Masters in Public Administration. For the past three years, I have worked at education focused non-profit organizations. During this time, I have worked as a literacy and math tutor for middle school students, as well as led a writing seminar for high school students preparing to go to college. I am from Tulsa, OK and came to Boston for college. I studied Biomedical Engineering at both Boston University during undergrad and Tufts University for my masters. After much thought, I deviated from a medical school track to pursue a career in the medical device industry. My love for math and science started around middle school, and I was strongly influenced by my teachers. Through tutoring, I hope to be a similar influence. I really enjoy working with students of all ages (elementary to grads!) In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, hiking, and volunteering at the Animal Rescue League in Boston. I am a University of Michigan College of Pharmacy and will be graduating this April with my Doctor of Pharmacy degree. One of the reasons I chose to go into pharmacy school was so that I could make a difference in people???s lives, no matter how big or small. That is also why I have a passion for tutoring, something I have been doing since 2012. I absolutely love seeing a student???s face light up with understanding and seeing him/her improve as time goes by. I think the best way to tutor is to find the root of the issue whether it???s time management, difficulty in understanding the material, or difficulty in applying the material; and then using different strategies to really address that issue in a collaborative manner in order to really help the student improve. As someone currently in graduate school, I have seen my peers struggle with subjects and struggled myself. Through this and my past experiences tutoring, I have come up with many different strategies for learning and ways to address a student???s different learning style as well. During my spare time, I love trying new things, completing jigsaw puzzles (my current challenge is a 2000 piece puzzle!), learning how to sew and make my own clothes, and just being outside and exploring the area.
