Algebra Tutoring review by Julia in Lindenhurst, IL
We began the session by going over the homework questions that were assigned last week. Overall, the student had a good grasp of the basic concept of the problems; however, he struggled some with problems that required a few steps or required more complex thinking to solve. I guided him through each homework problem in detail, and he was able to complete one on his own after doing so. To double-check his comprehension of the problems, I assigned a few more for him to work out on his own. We also moved onto scatter plots and coordinate planes, and I assigned a few problems from this section as well. In science, we discussed energy, and the difference between potential and kinetic energy. He had a good understanding of what each one was and how they can change. We discussed Newton's Laws, particularly how energy cannot be created or destroyed but can change forms. We also discussed force, and the formula to calculate it. We talked about how we can rearrange the formula to solve for either of the three variables. Lastly, we talked again about the importance of units and how to figure out what the units for an answer should be. I assigned more reading and chapter reviews for him to complete before the next session.

Algebra Tutoring review by Courtney in Lindenhurst, IL
The student and I made really great progress today into the algebra curriculum. We reviewed FOIL expansion and factoring, which he remembered easily. Today we continued to move forward with more of the information he will likely see at the beginning of the school year, including functions and solving and graphing equations and inequalities. Although some of the graphing was a review, I think it was good for him to go back over finding the slope and y-intercept of equations. Graphing inequalities was a brand new skill, so we worked on how to remember a dotted vs. solid line and what direction to shade. He seemed to understand the concepts very well and any review material came back quickly. Towards the end of the session we also went into systems of equations and solving them using both graphing and elimination methods. These ideas were a little more complicated, but the student did a great job of working through any comprehension difficulties. I think he is well-prepared to encounter any of these subjects.

Algebra Tutoring review by Amy in Lindenhurst, IL
The student was given another chance by her teacher to retake the test. So I helped her study. The material was the exact same as our last meeting. She did much better this time around and retained some of what we discussed in the first meeting.

Algebra Tutoring review by Jacqueline in Lindenhurst, IL
The student and I went through her exam test prep for her upcoming midterm next week. We worked through each problem and stopped to review concepts when she was having issues completing a problem. She honestly did very well; out of the 50 questions we went through she only struggled with 2 of them (GCF and roots of fractions) but once we went over how to obtain the root of a fraction she was able to do all of the root problems on the exam review sheet. The only other issue we had going through the review sheet were minor addition or subtraction errors which are a given in math, but I think she would be able to reduce the number of errors she makes if she slows down a bit going through the problem and uses her calculator to double check her work. She definitely already seems to be much more confident in her skills and I believe she will be able to perform very well on her exam as long as she slows down and stays calm.

Algebra Tutoring review by Jose in Lindenhurst, IL
Tomorrow, the student has a test on exponential and logarithmic functions, finding their inverses, and domain and range. Therefore, we went over a study guide he had, solving problems to practice even more before the test. He has more homework that he will be doing.
