Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Jessica in Lindenhurst, IL
During this session, the student completed various assignments, which included homework assignments and some handouts I provided. First, to complete one of his homework assignments, he read a story titled Oh Can You Seed?. This book informed the reader about the process of a seed growing into a plant. After reading the book, he had to write two complete sentences about the book. Usually, he writes sentences stating why he enjoyed the book. This time, I required him to write detailed sentences about what he learned from the book. Next, to prepare for his upcoming spelling quiz, he studied and practiced the spelling the words from the list provided by his teacher. Third, he completed four handouts I provided. The first three handouts required him to form compound words from the list of words provided. He informed me that he really liked those exercises. The fourth handout was a reading comprehension exercise, which required him to read the story provided and to answer questions to test his understanding of the story as well as his memory. He did extremely well with this assignment. In the final minutes of session, the student and I played a story game, which required each of us to take turns writing a sentence and drawing a corresponding picture in order to create a story.

Reading Tutoring review by Claire in Lindenhurst, IL
At this session, the student told me that she had gotten her progress report and was doing well in all areas, but had an A- in English because she doesn't volunteer to read out loud. So, we worked on her reading fluency and public speaking skills. She already has very high fluency, but she wanted to speak with more expression. We went over posture and breath, which support a strong, clear speaking voice, and also practiced enunciation. First she read from a book that was easy for her - Stuart Little - and we worked on diaphragmatic breathing; not skipping over short words like a, an, and the; and breathing more often between sentences so she does not run out of breath. We also discussed how it feels and sounds when she uses enough breath to produce a sound that reverberates in the room. She then read the beginning of A Dog's Journey, a book at a higher level, to practice what we had already worked on. We agreed she can continue reading this book with me whenever she does not have homework to work on.
