ACT Math Tutoring review by Michael in Minneapolis, MN
I brought with me several practice worksheets on exponents, radicals, and logarithms that I had printed out. The student had asked for this extra, focused practice with more exponent rules. We chose problems to do from the worksheets in order to practice rules that she needed to review. I left her with the complete worksheets and answer keys to practice on her own.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Nabila in Minneapolis, MN
Yesterday the student and I began with a review of some things she had questions on. She wanted to go over when to use slope-intercept form and when to use point-slope form, and I explained that they represent the same thing but in different forms, so it's actually up to her what she would prefer to use for a question. While going over the two forms, I found that she needs some more practice with the slope formula, which is m=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1). Some extra practice with PEMDAS and simplifying expressions will also be good for her, as I believe she's very good at the macro-level concept. After clarifying the above, we went onto start talking about quadratics. Within our discussion, we went over how to FOIL, how to factor expressions with a = 1 as well as a = something other than 1, and how to find the roots of a parabola by setting everything = 0. We covered almost everything but completing the square, which we will get to next time. In addition to sending her materials to practice what we learned about quadratics, I will be sending her some things to practice PEMDAS, slope, and linear equations as well.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Art in Minneapolis, MN
The student and I worked through a practice math session today. He would work through about 10-15 problems at a time, and then we would discuss what he got wrong and why. He performed relatively well overall, but on the topics that he struggled with, primarily logarithms and functions, he was really struggling. His biggest problem is still that he doesn't write enough of the problem's steps down on his scratch paper. He claims that he has always been a mental math sort of guy, and I have discussed this with him multiple times. He feels that he wastes too much time writing out the steps. We had the biggest win, perhaps of all our sessions, when I was able to demonstrate to him that he could actually work through certain problems, especially ones with several steps, much faster when writing down the steps. I mentioned in my last report that he will do possibly very well on his ACT reading section, depending on his focus level, and the same is true with math. He is very talented at it, and he has the skills to answer every single question. It will just be a question of whether or not he can stay focused and organized on test day. I assigned him one more practice test, which he is going to spend 15-20 minutes a section on this Saturday morning, at the same time of his exam. We discussed some strategies, and how he is going to warm up, etc.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Jennifer in Minneapolis, MN
I gave the student some more trig worksheets and a study sheet to keep on working on that material (since it's all completely new to him), then we worked on ACT practice problems. I discovered he didn't know logarithms, so I gave him a basic introduction and will bring worksheets on the topic next time. We also went over perfect square quadratic equations (recognizing and factoring), completing the square method of solving quadratics, and I showed him the derivation of the quadratic formula using completing the square.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Stephen in Minneapolis, MN
We worked through the an ACT Math practice test. He has a very strong Math background and is able to work very quickly. I pointed out how he made some errors by rushing right into problems without considering his strategy first. I advised him to consider what kind of problem he was working on (pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, or trig) and what properties or equations he has to work with. Sometimes there are simpler ways to arrive at an answer than the steps he takes, and as he can make calculations quickly I told him that he'll have plenty of time to plan his strategy for the difficult problems. Apart from this, I also told him to try to use specific numbers to try on problems where substitution is a possibility or abstract reasoning problems. The other important thing to consider for these is to try a few different numbers before deciding the answer will be correct for all numbers. After this, we did a few more problems, focusing on geometry and trig. He should do very well on the test.
