What does Tucson GMAT preparation cover?
The GMAT is comprised of four sections intended to evaluate your ability to think critically: the Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning. The skills you are being assessed on in this exam are specifically designed to evaluate your potential for academic success in today's graduate management and business programs. Let's take a closer look at what each portion of the exam will expect you to have mastered.
The Analytical Writing Assessment measures your ability to analyze an argument which has been given to you in written form. This section of the exam contains only one question, and you must finish it within 30 minutes. You are not required to have any prior knowledge of the topic; you simply need to determine if you believe the argument presented has made good use of the evidence. This section is judging your ability to organize, develop, and express your ideas clearly using critical thinking and solid examples.
The Integrated Reasoning section of the exam is appraising your capacity to analyze and synthesize information from various sources. There are four types of questions in the segment: multi-source reasoning, table analysis, graphics interpretation, and two-part analysis. Some of these questions will require more than one response, and you must answer all the parts correctly to receive credit. Multi-source reasoning questions assess your ability to evaluate data from different sources and answer multiple questions. Table analysis questions determine whether you are able to look at a table of data and determine if you have the information necessary to solve a problem. Graphics interpretation questions measure your ability to evaluate data presented in a scatterplot, bar chart, or other types of graphic in order to make inferences into certain relationships. Two-part analysis questions assess whether you are able to solve complex problems with multiple steps. This section contains 12 questions and must be finished within a half hour, so it is essential to be able to move through these questions quickly and efficiently.
The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your ability to determine whether you have sufficient data to answer a problem and use critical thinking to solve an issue. This section has 31 multiple-choice questions, and you must be finished within 62 minutes. On this part of the exam, you must have a foundational knowledge of algebra, geometry, and arithmetic concepts, but you are not specifically being tested on your mathematical skills. Instead, you are being evaluated on your ability to use the skills to think critically and solve problems of a quantitative nature.
The Verbal Reasoning section measures your reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction skills. This part of the exam consists of 36 multiple-choice questions which you must finish within 65 minutes. Reading comprehension and critical reasoning questions require you to read and understand a passage. You must be able to understand relationships between main ideas, draw inferences, and determine whether an answer option strengthens or weakens an argument. For sentence correction questions, you must showcase your ability to edit sentences so they are grammatically and structurally correct.
When you arrive on exam day, you will be given the opportunity to decide which sequence you wish to take the sections in. There are three options, and you only have a few minutes to make this decision.
